Why Is Dunn Still a Falcon?

The Falcons did everything they could to fix their running game with the signing of Michael Turner. Turner's size and speed, combined with Jerious Norwood's big play ability should give the Falcons a solid running game, if they can find anyone to block.

But it also begs the question, why is Warrick Dunn still on the roster?

The Falcons are going to cut Dunn, it's just a matter of when they will do it. But for a guy who has been such a standup member of the team, and one of the league's good guys, it's only fair to cut him loose as soon as possible.

The mad money in free agency dries up quickly, so it's in Dunn's interest to hit the market quickly before teams that need tailbacks fill all their needs. It's why Dunn requested his release on Sunday as soon as he heard about Turner's signing. He's supposedly generating interest from the Cowboys, Texans and Broncos.

The Falcons could have cut Dunn before they signed Turner--they were never going to pay him the $6 million he's owed for the 2008 season. But now that Dunn's is absolutely not in the Falcons plans, they should release him today. Any waiting just makes life tougher on Dunn and serves no purpose for the Falcons, who will get $3 million in cap relief when the cut him.
