Multiple media outlets are reporting that Packers quarterback Brett Favre has told coach Mike McCarthy that he is retiring, bringing to an end a Hall of Fame career in Green Bay.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports:
Favre has decided to retire. In fact, it's believed he informed the Packers of his decision within the last few days, although it's unclear when Favre and the team will make his decision known.
So barring an unforeseen last-minute change of heart, Favre will leave the game after 17 years, during which he built himself into a household name and a figure synonymous with grit, toughness and perseverance.
Neither GM Ted Thompson nor head coach Mike McCarthy returned several calls left by FOXSports.com for confirmation.
After flirting with retirement for the last few years, Favre will finally go out on the heels of one of the best seasons of his career.
Favre leaves after one of his best seasons, in which he was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. The Aaron Rodgers era will now begin.

2. I'm disappointed in Favre. His team was one play away from the Super Bowl, and he decides to hang it up. He should have given us one more year - I really think the Pack could have won it all this year with Favre at the helm.
Football won't be the same.

5. It is a sad day for Packer fans to hear that you are retiring Brett. Thank you for 17 wonderful seasons! Wish you would have stayed for another year or two. It just won't be the same without you. You are loved!

7. What a great move. (I mean that sincerely.) He goes out on top. No "..he shoulda left the game sooner" type talk. Like a good entertainer, he leaves the stage with the crowd wanting more.
At his age, 300 pound defensive linemen who are faster and stronger every year, make it more difficult to prepare for the rigors of the season and week to week recovery.
Well done, both his career and sense of knowing when to walk.

9. If it is true that he's leaving because they didn't sign Randy... good riddance, after years of holding the team hostage it's sad that the reason he's leaving is because Moss wanted to stay a Patriot

10. As glad I am that my team won't ever have to face him again, I am equally sad to see such a great player leave the game. Thank you for everything Brett(mostly beating the Seahawks in the playoffs) and I wish you the best.

11. Although certainly he has earned the right to go out
when he wants, I can't help feeling that Ted Thompson
has been lukewarm for the past couple of years to
having him back and that might have influenced his
decision. As to Nancie Spranger's comments, we had
the 2nd best record in football and Brett had one
of his best seasons ever so I think we were already
on track! And StigmaA, you must be one of the
following: A Bear fan, A Viking fan, or an idiot
(and they are not mutually exclusive!)
UP Packer Fan (Born on Oct. 10th like Brett)

12. At long last this washed up loser has taken to the retirement track...and as usual, he ends up on top. He just signed a pharmaceutical contract worth more than his Green Bay contract last year...unbelievable:

19. Thanks Brett! Great career!!.....so glad to know you respected the game and didn't do other bone head things other players do (get arrested, bring bad press, etc). Glad to see you got out at the top as well. God Bless you!

20. If in fact, Favre has truly decided to retire, we wish the best of luck to him and his family! He has juggled this decision for a while now and maybe just decided it was time. Whatever his reason, he has given packer fans many great years of games & memories that aren't to be forgotten! It's selfish, but well understood, why we want him to keep playing. He may not be suited up, but know that we have not seen the last of this "LEGEND." We still have his commercials and it's more than likely we'll see him at some games (maybe even the sidelines)! "THANK YOU BRETT, FOR ALL THE WONDERFUL YEARS!"
