ESPN's Chris Mortensen Credits Jay Glazer for Brett Favre Scoop

There's a general consensus in the sports blogosphere that ESPN doesn't do a good enough job of crediting other media outlets that break sports news. So a lot of sports bloggers were surprised by this report:

Chris Mortensen broke into Mike and Mike in the Morning and reported the retirement of Brett Favre, but he didn't pass it off as his own exclusive report. Instead, Mortensen said, "Bus Cook, Brett's longtime agent, confirmed what Jay Glazer of Fox has reported, which is that Brett did tell Mike McCarthy, the coach of the Packers, last night that he's finished, that he's retiring."

Mike Greenberg then said to Mortensen, "It was Jay Glazer's report on FoxSports.com, and you've now confirmed."

The sports blogosphere's response includes:

"Bigger shock than Favre's retirement? ESPN recognized that Glazer and FOXSports.com broke the story." -- Sports by Brooks.

"ESPN checks in at 9:39 with Mort confirming what Glazer had, and giving Fox credit. ESPN is playing nice!" -- The Big Lead.

"Mort acknowledged during the Man-Girl & Meatball In The Morning show that FOX had it first." -- Pro Football Talk.

You wouldn't think the simple act of attributing information to another source would be cause for celebration, but there you go.
