After fake-retiring for the last three off-seasons, Brett Favre has finally gone and done it. Thank God. Now we can all get on with our lives.
He's undoubtedly a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and if Peter King were running things, Favre would be inducted in a ceremony later today. (King has scheduled a vigil for dusk outside of a hastily constructed "Shrine to Brett" in the Lambeau Field parking lot. Lovefest starts promptly at 5 p.m.)
But why did Favre retire now, after the Packers won 13 games and made it to the NFC Championship last season? My guess: Randy Moss. Yep, Favre begged the Packers to make a run at Moss last spring, and he ended up going to New England FOR A FOURTH-ROUND PICK.
Last week, Favre again made it clear that Moss would be a nice little addition to Green Bay's offense, and how did the front office cater to the league's most important player? They ignored him. And that went over so well that Favre has now decided to leave the team in the capable hands of Aaron Rodgers. This is the same guy with zero career starts in three NFL seasons, and was the 2005 Draft's second-best quarterback ... after Alex Smith. I don't see this ending badly.
Meanwhile, Favre will spend the next few months, well, acting like he's still the Packers quarterback. In recent off-seasons, Favre has used the time between the end of the season and the middle of the summer to contemplate his future. And when I say "contemplate his future" I mean "get heavily involved in his redneck roots -- hunting, Nascar, wearing camouflage to Wal-Mart, and a nouveau redneck pursuit: golf."
Two things: first, I'm kidding. Favre is a swell guy, deserving of all the accolades we can heap on him (you'll have to fight King for the mic, though). Second, I actually think Rodgers will seamlessly transition into the starting job and the Packers should still be favorites to make a nice little postseason run in 2008.
Plus, Rodgers is already working the mullet so most Cheesehead fans might not realize Favre is missing until midway through the season. Everybody wins.

1. Its About Time This Guy Retired. He Should've Retired Years Ago. He Probably Just Stayed To Get A Couple More Records. The Best Record Though Is The For INT's. Now Green Bay Came Move On And Forget This Guy. Now Its A-Rod's Team. Go Bucs!

3. You're an awful writer with poorly formed opinions, not only this post.
Moss had to agree to restructure his contract, so he was only going to Green Bay if they were willing to trade more than New England AND pay him his full base salary (or something agreeable).
Mixing sarcasm into your paragraphs makes things hard to read and just makes you sound like a buffoon and your post even less worth reading.

Ryan, way to fuel the morons who can't get out of their mother's basements.

7. All you people that think it was Favre's time to hang it up...well you got your wish, now lets see just how many seasons Mr. Breakable can go! I wish Aaron the best, as I bleed green and gold but based on how he has preformed in the games he played I for one am not convinced he can hold up for an entire season without injury...
Brett,if you happen across this, the majority of GB is in mourning today. I for one never would have thought you would have let Moss destroy the Packers, I sympathise with the fact that management didn't abide with your wishes, but you could have easily brought this team to a Championship again.

Yea, I'd say Aaron Rodgers is set up to succeed. He's been studying under Favre for 3 years now, and a lot of great quarterbacks spent some time interning before launching fine careers (i.e. - Steve Young to Joe Montana).
Besides, the Pack has been largely unaffected by this offseason (Favre aside). No major free agent defections, coaching turnover, or off-field police blotter incidents.
And lastly, who else in the NFC North is going to compete? Grossman/Orton and da Bears? The Lions? I doubt even the Vikes will pose much of a threat. All QB's should get to start in such a rosy situation as Rodgers is.
