Randy Moss Has Moved on to Sabotaging Teams Other Than His Own

After fake-retiring for the last three off-seasons, Brett Favre has finally gone and done it. Thank God. Now we can all get on with our lives.

He's undoubtedly a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and if Peter King were running things, Favre would be inducted in a ceremony later today. (King has scheduled a vigil for dusk outside of a hastily constructed "Shrine to Brett" in the Lambeau Field parking lot. Lovefest starts promptly at 5 p.m.)

But why did Favre retire now, after the Packers won 13 games and made it to the NFC Championship last season? My guess: Randy Moss. Yep, Favre begged the Packers to make a run at Moss last spring, and he ended up going to New England FOR A FOURTH-ROUND PICK.

Last week, Favre again made it clear that Moss would be a nice little addition to Green Bay's offense, and how did the front office cater to the league's most important player? They ignored him. And that went over so well that Favre has now decided to leave the team in the capable hands of Aaron Rodgers. This is the same guy with zero career starts in three NFL seasons, and was the 2005 Draft's second-best quarterback ... after Alex Smith. I don't see this ending badly.

Meanwhile, Favre will spend the next few months, well, acting like he's still the Packers quarterback. In recent off-seasons, Favre has used the time between the end of the season and the middle of the summer to contemplate his future. And when I say "contemplate his future" I mean "get heavily involved in his redneck roots -- hunting, Nascar, wearing camouflage to Wal-Mart, and a nouveau redneck pursuit: golf."

Two things: first, I'm kidding. Favre is a swell guy, deserving of all the accolades we can heap on him (you'll have to fight King for the mic, though). Second, I actually think Rodgers will seamlessly transition into the starting job and the Packers should still be favorites to make a nice little postseason run in 2008.

Plus, Rodgers is already working the mullet so most Cheesehead fans might not realize Favre is missing until midway through the season. Everybody wins.
