English Fans Paying High Price for Football

n another one of its usually breathless headlines, The Sun announced that the average English soccer fan spent 1,331 pounds (~$2600) on their teams last season. The survey covered all four divisions, from the loftiest Chelsea to the lowliest Luton Town, breaking down fans spending habits. Reports from some larger clubs had some fans spending upwards of $6000/year on tickets, with one in eight paying such a price. Factor in estimates of a couple hundred dollars a year on memorabilia and apparel, and showing your support becomes a hefty annual fee.

No wonder howls over ticket prices and the overcommercialization of the EPL are increasing by the day. With all of money going into club football, and the stakes being as high as they've ever been, there country is going to reach a point where financial parity is thrown completely out the window and competitive balance along with it. But, its not all bad news, the paper is also reporting that almost half of the EPL froze their ticket prices this year with some clubs even cutting back. Wigan, for example, cut prices 33 percent and is well on their way to becoming our new favorite smaller club.
