The Word:

Cubs Could Play at U.S. Cellular Field for a Year; Three Cheers for Blessings in Disguise

A change is gonna come on the North Side of Chicago; the question, at this point, is not whether things are going to be different, but how. Will Wrigley Field's name change? Will it be renovated, Fenway-style? Will the landmark signage outside the stadium be rewritten? Will the surrounding neighborhood become "Bank of America-ville?" These are the pressing questions of our age.

After more of the same news today -- the usual "we don't want to change x, but we do want to make y" platitudes from Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney -- not all that much is new. The name might change, the park might get renovated, and so on. Standard stuff all around, except the blockbuster: The Cubs might have to play a year on the South Side at U.S. Cellular Field.

Which makes for a potentially fascinating study in fandom. How many Cubs fans will take the train south? There's better parking, so more folks from out of town could join in ... but without Wrigley's boozy charm, will they want to? For Cubs fans who also enjoy the game of baseball (ahem), a less touristy atmosphere, better sightlines, and fewer walking stereotypes (Oh my God we're so drunk! Can you take a photo?!), sounds like a glorious respite.

Just for a year, though. Let's not get crazy.
