Kyle Lohse Finally Has a Job

One of the strangest on-going subplots this off-season has been Kyle Lohse's extended unemployment. His asking price started a bit high (in the neighborhood of $10 million a year), but Carlos Silva, who isn't much better, got $48 million for 4 years from Seattle, making Lohse's asking price seem at least somewhat sane. Still, free agents disappeared all winter while Lohse sat at home with even guys like Kris Benson and Sidney Ponson getting minor league deals ahead of teams wanting to add Lohse to their roster.

Finally, Lohse's long nightmare is over because, as speculated yesterday, he's signed a one-year contract with the pitching thin Cardinals. There's no quotes from him about this yet, but if I had to guess it would be something along the lines of, "Sweet, Jesus! Finally! Boras is so fricking fired for putting me through this!"

It's not all good news for Lohse. A one-year deal means he's got to do it all over again next winter unless the Cards' extend him, which seems unlikely at the present. And since he's playing for the Cardinals, it doesn't seem likely he's going to ring up a gaudy win total to pad his resumé with. At least he's got someone to pitch for this year. At this point, that's probably enough for him.
