One of the great secrets of the sports blogosphere has been revealed by Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated, who reported that the blogger known as The Big Lead is a 31-year-old Brooklynite named Jason McIntyre.McIntyre tells Deitsch:
"It never really crossed my mind until now," he says. "I had opportunities. NPR asked me to come on, and I've done some interviews anonymously."As Deitsch notes, McIntyre's agreement to out himself comes a month after the writers of another famously anonymous sports blog, Fire Joe Morgan, revealed their true identities. (One of the writers is Michael Schur, a writer and producer for NBC's The Office.)
Although we at FanHouse have some bloggers who use a pen name (including, for a while, The Big Lead himself), my own view is that by the time a blogger has reached the readership levels of a Big Lead or a Fire Joe Morgan, he ought to put his own name on his work. A writer who writes under his own name comes across as more accountable, both to his readers and to his subjects. Knowing the name Jason McIntyre won't change the way I read The Big Lead, but I'm still glad it's been revealed.

1. I can only hope this trend continues here at FanHouse, so Michael David Smith can finally blog under his real name: David Michael Smith
