DeAngelo Hall or Not, Nnamdi Asomugha Is Going to Get Paid

While we wait for Matlock to sort out the DeAngelo Hall-to-the-Raiders mess, the Oakland Tribune's Jerry McDonald writes that if Hall gets nice little salary bump with the Silver and Black, that could portend good things for the team's best cornerback, Nnamdi Asomugha.

I mentioned yesterday that Asomugha probably wouldn't be all that psyched about Hall, a player most reasonable people can agree is a lesser talent, getting a long-term deal. But maybe it's not necessarily a bad thing for Asomugha:
Asomugha already will pocket $10 million in 2008, give or take a few hundred thousand. To keep him on the roster in 2009, the Raiders would have to franchise him again and give him a 20 percent raise. Either that or let him go as a free agent.

That means Asomugha stands to make approximately $22 million over two years with the Raiders, or $10 million in 2008 plus whatever he could get on the open market in 2009 if the Raiders opted not to franchise him.

With those options, the $20 million in guarantees given Asante Samuel in Philadelphia could be insufficient to bring in Asomugha.
Obviously, there's some risk involved -- Asomugha could get injured, or just have a bad season. On the other hand, even though getting franchised isn't ideal, $22 million ain't bad for two years of work.

Best case: the Raiders give Asomugha a long-term contract. Worst case, he gets franchised in 2008 and 2009, and hits the free-agent market with $22 million. And Raiders fans will be left to wonder why the organization signed DeAngelo Hall in the first place. It'll be just like being a Falcons fan save all the puppy murdering.
