Conference: MAC
Record: 28-6, 16-3 in conference
RPI: 21
How They Got In: Won MAC tournament
Seed/Bracket: 9/Midwest
Mascot: Golden Flashes. From Wikipedia:
Around [1920], the teams became known as the "Silver Foxes" because then-president John McGilvrey raised silver foxes on his farm. After McGilvrey's controversial firing in 1926, the new administration held a contest to choose a different team name and "Golden Flashes" was chosen. The school colors of Navy Blue and Gold were originally Orange and Purple as outlined in the original 1910 charter. When the basketball team's uniforms were taken to a local cleaner, the hot water caused the colors to fade to blue and gold. The team and student body liked the new colors and voted to change them.
Big Win: The Golden Flashes don't have any one signature win, which is why they were considered a bubble team if they hadn't won the MAC tournament, despite their high RPI. The best win was in February over St. Mary's, when they held SMC 20 points below their average, did it in hostile surroundings and against a bigger team.
Notable Loss: Kent opened the season with a horrendous loss to Detroit, which has an RPI of 286.
Player You Should Know: Senior Mike Scott leads the team in minutes played and is second in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. For a 6-foot-7 forward, he's got a good outside shot: He made 37 of 94 three-pointers.
Outlook: Kent should win its opening round game, but the Golden Flashes' lack of a win against a top-tier team makes it hard to think they're going to get past the first weekend of the Tournament.
