Jose Canseco is about to launch a big publicity push for his new book, Vindicated, which will be released in a couple of weeks. Part of his book tour will include a swing through California, at which time IRS special agent Jeff Novitzky, the guy in charge of investigating whether Roger Clemens perjured himself, hopes to have a friendly chat. As far as Canseco's people are concerned, though, the only way a meeting will happen will be if Nowitzky tracks Canseco down and makes it happen himself. From the New York Daily News:
"This is what it is - we have a book tour and part of the tour happens to be in San Francisco where Novitzky is. And assuming that we have time when we're up there to see him, we will," Canseco's attorney, Robert Saunooke, told the Daily News Tuesday. "If we don't have time, then we won't."Canseco has every reason to be nervous -- he signed a sworn affidavit stating that Clemens never attended his now infamous BBQ back in 1998, even though Clemens himself has allowed himself a bit of wiggle room saying he may have arrived late to the function after playing golf. If Canseco gets tripped up by getting his facts crossed, not only might that land him in legal trouble but it's also not the best publicity for his book, which has already had its accuracy called into question.
Saunooke said that while his client is happy to cooperate with the government, "we're not under subpoena. I'm not going to get in a plane, nor is Jose, at our expense, to go flying out on whatever wild goose chase they want to go on.
"We're happy to help, but we're not going to go out of our way to find them. They know where we are. We can cooperate, we always have. It just happens that we'll be in San Francisco, and if that works well, that works well."
