New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston might be the most underpaid player in the NFL. Thanks to his status as a 2006 seventh-round draft pick -- and thanks to the silly way NFL contracts are structured -- Colston has made the league minimum his first two years in the NFL.His production, however, has been anything but minimal. In two NFL seasons Colston has 168 catches for 2,240 yards and 19 touchdowns.
But Colston doesn't appear close to getting a raise any time soon, so he's likely to make $445,000 in 2008, making him probably the lowest-paid starting receiver in the NFL. And that doesn't really seem to bother him all that much:
"It's not even really something I've thought about to this point," said Colston, who admitted it would be nice to get something done and not have to worry about it, "but that's the business we're in. So I'm really not concerned about that right now."My major concern is getting my knee healthy and my hand healthy, and hopefully everything plays itself out right."
Colston is aware that he's a wide receiver, isn't he? Doesn't he know that receivers are supposed to be prima donnas who take the Chad Johnson/Terrell Owens approach of demanding a raise or threatening a holdout? Colston seems like a mature young man and a good teammate. Here's hoping that doesn't cost him come contract negotiation time.

1. I personally don't believe for a second that the team isn't talking with Colston about a deal.
Marques is very humble, very low key, so it doesn't surprise me that he's taking this stance regarding negotiations. Neither he nor the team want to negotiate through the papers, and the Saints typically negotiate extensions on the DL.
I'm quite confident that they're talking, or that, at the very least, they'll be talking after the draft. But I don't think they'll let it get to training camp without Colston having a new deal.

2. Marques cannot act like a prima donna forcing the Saints to give him a pay raise but the same time he has to be paid his money worth when his contract is about to expire.
