Lions Have No Need for Pacman Jones

So here's what we know -- or, more precisely -- what Pacman Jones' agent Manubir Arora wants us to know: Dallas, New England and Detroit are all interested in his client. The Cowboys don't deny the rumors and word on the street has the Patriots sniffing around but not willing to give up draft picks to acquire Jones.

And the Lions? Well, somebody woke up Matt Millen long enough to issue a statement. "We've talked about it, but for a lot of reasons, we aren't going to try to get him. He has a lot of talent. We wish him well."

And that sounds right. That Millen is the voice of reason here pretty much tells you all you need to know: Dallas and New England have serious enough needs at cornerback that they could be willing to take a gamble on Jones. Even if he's been arrested a half-dozen times in the last two years.

For the Lions, they traded for Leigh Bodden earlier this off-season and while a team can never have too many good cornerbacks there are other issues to consider.
But [Jones] would bring a lot of baggage. He has been suspended since April 2007 for violations of the NFL's personal-conduct policy. The suspension is indefinite. He has been arrested six times since the Titans drafted him sixth overall in 2005.

When coach Rod Marinelli says he wants football character, he doesn't mean he wants choir boys. He's referring to a love of the game and a relentless work ethic. But he values chemistry in the locker room.
No mention of stripper poles and babysitting services, however -- something Arora is looking for in Jones' next team.
