Tiger Woods Is an Utter Failure; Loses for First Time This Year

I guess we can add "choker" to the long list of adjectives to describe the world's best player. Tiger Woods got off to a fast start at the CA Championships with opening rounds of 67 and 66, and then, out of nowhere, he posted a 72 on moving day ... while every other golfer on the property went low.

The final round spilled over into a Monday finish thanks to some crappy weekend weather, but not even God's best efforts could prevent the inevitable: Woods finally losing after eight months and seven tournaments. Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, was the wire-to-wire leader, and staved off late runs by Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk for the one-stroke victory.

Woods struggled with his putting for the first time all season and that proved to be the difference. Still, Eldrick managed to finish in fifth place just two strokes off the lead. The point: even when Woods is off his game, he's still pretty hard to beat.

In terms of Tiger's ultimate goal -- winning the grand slam -- I don't think this changes much. It just means we'll have to come up with storylines more original than "Will Woods Ever Lose Again?!?"
