Can we blame probation? Toyota? Subway commercials? A new girlfriend?I don't know which one to pick exactly, but for some God-awful reason, Tony Stewart has given up on his barber.
As you can see to the right, Stewart's hair has gotten to unbelievable levels. It looks waxy, unkept, and straight out of an Italian crime drama. And it could very well be part of the Tony Stewart we've seen in 2008.
One week, he's ripping Goodyear for its tire selection at Atlanta. He's the only one, so he says, that is willing to take such a decisive stand on a issue in the garage area.
The next, he's giving one of the oddest interviews of his career after getting out of his wrecked race car in Bristol. Instead of being livid, mad, and otherwise Tony Stewart-like, Driver No. 20 had a strange sense of sarcasm and a cool head, despite being wrecked with 2 laps to go.
For once, Stewart wasn't snappy with a reporter, didn't throw anyone under the bus, and played off a disappointing finish with a cool approach.
What does that have to do with his hair?
Well, absolutely nothing, to be honest.
But it all relates in that many things have seemed to change about the way Tony is handling himself on and off of the race track. His hair -- and the lack of trimming it has received -- may just be an indicator that Stewart is trying to change who he is on the track. (If you're lucky, we'll talk about the expanding waistline next week)
Or, we're making these assumptions all because Stewart hasn't received his quarterly Great Clips coupon.
Two things are for sure though. Tony needs a haircut, and there's something different going on this season with the No. 20 -- and in a positive direction.

1. Now I am not saying this to be glib, but I honestly think Tony Stewart is taking some kind of new medication, one for anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood control, something. Not only would that explain his "odd behaviors" as of late, but it would also explain the unkempt appearance as well as the obvious new weight gain since many of the above mentioned medications have a side effect of weight gain. I actually feel for the guy for once. He seems to really be trying to become a kinder, gentler Tony Stewart although I do miss the occasional outbursts and temper tantrums as they make for a much more exciting race.
I guess unless Tony reveals the answer we will never know. My money is definitely on "medicinal therapy" for Stewart.

2. I like Tony's hair but I thought that he was cutting it after his 1st win. I like his attitude then and now. I think that Tony and Harvick had the disagreement mostly worked out before Tony stepped out of the car at Bristol.
I'm staying in the Smoke Fan Club!

3. Hey Susan! :-)
I am with you. I actually like Stewart's longer hair as well. I don't think it looks greasy at all, maybe sweaty after four plus hours in a race car, but not greasy. I also think it makes him stand out from the other clean cut drivers. I never used to be a Stewart fan but I am finding that he is actually growing on me. I guess because the races and the cars themselves are so boring, I am now attracted to a race car driver who is not (boring that is). :-)

4. Tony got his hair cut March 19. The new 'do made it's first public appearance at Mark Martin's fan gathering on Good Friday.

5. Maybe Tony is just trying out new ways to stand out within JGR and Nascar. JGR now has 3 "bad boys" as drivers, and perhaps Tony is looking for a way to hold onto his top bad-ass persona. The again, maybe he was trying out life out as Toni.

6. I think Geoff may have a man crush on Tony. Am I the only that has noticed almost 1/3 of all the articles posted have been about TS? I guess it is better than reading TGOM fawn all over her fav in half the posts she wrote. Now I am the first to admit that TS is one of the top 5 drivers in Nascar. And he certainly has been an interesting character in the past. However, I tend to once again agree with Kim on this one. TS is either under some new meds or is undergoing some type of radical transformation. I wonder how much longer it will be before he starts shaving every day.

7. Mike,
Man crush indeed. I just looked back and saw how many posts have been about TS lately and I was a bit shocked.
I will admit to you, though, that TS isn't exactly at the top of my "faves" list. And no, I won't reveal it.

8. Ahhhh yes, writing about Tony is always sure to gather responses out the kazoo. I liked Tony when he first arrived on the scene, but I don't care much for him now. Long hair/short hair, weight gain/weight loss, winning or losing, Tony is still a cry baby and acts like a spoiled brat. Bad ass and cry baby are terms that don't go together well, you're either one or the other. As far as girlfriends go, ever hear of the term "smoke screen", (excuse the pun.) Any man Tony's age who's never been married does make you wonder about his preference in partners. All that aside, he is a talented driver, but a troubled indivdual in my book. And Geof, who knows, Tony may have a man crush on you too. Works for me.....

9. Mike, Geoffrey, & Don,
Now those were some funny comments! I have never heard the term "man crush" before seeing it on this blog. Same goes for the saying "Throw somebody under the bus." I had never heard that before reading it on the Fanhouse pages. I guess I have been living under a rock or something? Anyway, that was truly funny! I love that Geoffrey has a good sense of humor instead of getting easily offended. :-) And Geoffrey, I am bummed you won't share your "faves" list with us! I've shown you mine, you should show me yours! :-)

11. Tony is definetely and slowely becoming a new person in 2008. I said it last week and i'll repeat it. He must been sedated on valium, judgeing by the way he reacted to harvick wreck of him.
The MEDS are definitely working and they may not be valium at all. That's why some posters should contact
tony at tony stewart .com and learn what meds he is on and begin to cure themselves with the same therapy. Oh and tony should remain the way he always was. Works for me.

15. I think Tony looks like a slob. He is unkempt and dirty looking. Not a very good image for the sport. I am sure he has enough money and enough time to get a hair cut.

16. I will take Tony Stewart any way that he comes! Long hair looks better I think than it being really short and so clean cut preppy like Gordon or Johnson. And so he has added a few pounds - so what we have all done that at one time or another. I love his sarcasm and smart-ass comments and will always remain a Tony Stewart Fan Club Member for LIFE!! GO #20 - I LOVE YOU! Sheila

17. I like Tonys hair, he said he will get it cut after his first race, and if you've noticed it hasn't happened yet, but it will and soon! And as for a girlfriend he has been engaged before, and there has been girls with him before the races during the National Anthem. Will you call Dale Jr. gay? Because you have Never seen him with any girl at any race before. I know he isn't, so unless you call every driver gay because they don't have woman with them before a race them do so.
