In probably his biggest off-season move, first year Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini (pictured at right) has put the kibosh on certain Lincoln nightspots, effective immediately.

Husker quarterback Joe Ganz said one rule is that guys aren't supposed to go to various downtown bars for the rest of the semester.

"We're grown men. We understand what we have to do to help us get there," Ganz said. "Like all college kids, we like to go out and have fun with each other. We always hung out with each other. But it's something we're going to have to sacrifice, and it's not a really big sacrifice to make if we're going to do what we want to do."

This is a wise move, that should only improve the players' focus, but it might be too little, too late in terms of discipline and avoiding off-season troubles. Just a few weeks ago offensive lineman Andy Christensen was involved in an alleged sexual assault at one local watering hole. That particular bar, the Brass Rail is now almost certainly on the team's "no fly zone." Pelini might also want to work to prevent the players from attending house parties, as a group of players was also ticketed for alcohol and party-related offenses at separate parties this spring.

No doubt many of the players are drinking in hopes of forgetting last year's disastrous showing, but enough is enough. With the additional report that several Huskers have slimmed down under new strength and conditioning coach James Dobson, it's clear that players might be buying into Pelini's Dean Wormer's immortal words:

"Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."
