Sevilla Fans Attack Atletico Madrid Fan as Spanish Soccer Violence Escalates

This graphic video, taken on a cell phone camera and shown widely on Spanish television (and previously posted at Machochip), shows a man bleeding on the sidewalk outside of Sevilla's Sanchez Pizjuan soccer stadium after he was attacked by fans of a rival team:

The victim is a fan of the Spanish soccer team Atletico Madrid, and he was apparently attacked by Sevilla fans simply because of his allegiance to his team. The incident has heightened concern about the level of violence in Spanish soccer:

"They are deplorable incidents that have no place in football and should not be allowed to be repeated," Atletico defender Pablo Ibanez told a news conference on Tuesday.

Spanish soccer has seen other instances of clashes between fans of rival teams, between fans and the police, and with fans throwing objects onto the pitch. This month a goalkeeper on another Spanish team needed stitches to patch up a cut on his face after a fan hit him with a bottle thrown from the stands.
