The Steelers still have a need at defensive end after all.A day after the Post-Gazette reported that Booger McFarland had signed with the Steelers, the paper's Website still reports that McFarland has signed with the Steelers. But the Beaver County Times, the Tribune Review and Steel City Insiders all have reported that the Steelers ended up pulling their offer to McFarland after he struggled through either his physical or a workout.
McFarland missed all of last season with a knee injury, and the Colts waived him after reporting that he failed a physical, so there seems to be some kind of continuing problem with his knee.
The bad news is that this means Pittsburgh is still in need of a second backup defensive end. It may not be coincidental that Hampton's Kendall Langford was visiting on Thursday--he'd be a perfect fit as a developmental defensive end who couldn't be counted on to do much in 2008, but could end up being a vital part of the team's line in future years, much like Brett Keisel and Aaron Smith took redshirt years during the rookie seasons.
