Doug Davis Diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer; Makes His Scheduled Start Anyway

Doug Davis has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer but plans to continue pitching while he undergoes treatment for the cancer. In fact, today, after the team confirmed the rumor to the media, Davis made his scheduled start anyway. Which is just flat out amazing, from a psychological and emotional standpoint.

Davis is expected to make his next few starts, [team President Derrick] Hall said.

Hall told Daron Sutton on FSNAZ that surgery is scheduled for April 10.

'We're not sure about the timetable after that,' Hall said. 'We're deeply saddened and concerned for Doug but we're still in the process of collecting facts and applying that to timing.'

Davis didn't pitch particularly well today, giving up back-to-back-to-back jacks and eight earned runs in only two and two thirds innings, but obviously that does not even approach "secondary" in importance to his health.

The AZ-Central article also points out, according to WebMD, "most patients are cured or live many years with the disease." Hall also stated that Davis was in a "terrific frame of mind". Thoughts and prayers are with Davis and his family and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

DOUG; I HAVE BEATEN CNCER TWICE(COLON CANCER) AND IF YOU DON'T THINK POSITIVE WITH YOUR BRAIN BY TELLING YOURSELF " I AM NOT SICK" YOU WILL DOUBLE YOUR TROUBLE IN GETTING BETTER! all you have to fight with is your "brain so ...USE IT"! my thoughts and prayers are with you....you showed the fans not only of baseball but of all sports that you have an amazing heart and spirit. In these times of players sitting out becouse of a hangnail or some similar "injury" if you had chosen not to take your scheduled start I'm sure it would not have been a big deal, but because you did you are a winner and a true hero in my book.

4. just pray and think posotive. i just had thyroid cancer as well and the surgery itself isn't that bad. go visit thyca.org and you can meet many people with thyroid cancer. i didn't use any pain killers. ull get really down. and thank god they found it
