The Jurrjens Surgeons. That's what Atlanta's newest in-stadium fan club is called. Naturally, it's named after new Braves' starter and recent first-major-league-start-winner Jair Jurrjens. Also, naturally, it's the only name that really works, since nothing else really rhymes with Jair's last name. The group, as far as I could during the game last night, dresses up in surgical gear and sits out in the stands. In vastly cooler news, though, for most Atlanta fans, it turns out Jurrjens is pretty legit. Or at least he looked the part against the Pirates last night, slinging scoreless darts for five innings before finally giving up a pair of runs in the sixth. Three of his seven hits allowed also came in the sixth, so the start really pans out better than the stats show. Jurrjens struck out five as well.
And it's not to say that he shouldn't have met the hype -- the Braves picked him up in the Edgar Renteria deal and he looked good in limited 2007 action with the Tigers -- but it's always a pleasant surprise when a team finds out that they actually have a rotation worthy starter that can bring the median age of the pitching staff down to 67.
Oh, and members of Jurrjens Surgeons, if you have photos, send them here (with expressed written permission for me to use them, of course.)

1. I beg to differ -- they could have called it Jurrjens Sturgeons and worn fish on their heads (or insisted that 90% of everything is crap). Or Jurrjens Virgins and admitted only plausibly young female fans. Or something a little less obvious like the Jurrgens Convergence.
(I will have you know I only got the rhyming dictionary out for the last one.)
