Here's NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell explaining the proposal to re-seed the NFL playoffs in an effort to make Week 17 games more important:
Goodell says the proposal is all about what's in the best interest of the fans, as the fans usually find the last week's slate of games boring, and re-seeding the playoffs to reward teams with the best records could make the last week more exciting.
But the owners clearly don't agree. Peter King of SI.com reports that when the owners took an informal straw poll at last week's meeting, only three of them supported the proposal. A change in playoff seeding would require 24 votes to pass, so if only three teams are in favor of it, there's no way it's going to happen any time soon.
Still, something should happen. The 17th week of the NFL regular season has become more like the fifth week of the preseason. That is definitely not what's best for the fans.

1. I thought this was a no-brainer rule change. Something that made not only statistical sense but competitive sense as well. Leave it to the NFL owners to screw it up. Next thing you know they'll be wanting to flag players for spiking the ball after a play or for trash talking. Oh, wait . . .
