Cowboys, Titans Engage in Staring Contest Over Pacman Jones

The Cowboys may covet Pacman Jones, but not so much that they're willing to give up more than they think he's worth to get him. It's been a week since Dallas offered the Titans a fourth- or fifth-round pick, and Tennessee countered with a fourth-rounder this year and another pick in 2009. So far, stalemate.

And since it seems like Jones doesn't have any other suitors -- even if he claims otherwise -- all that's left to do is wait. Wait for the Titans to relent, wait for another team to decide Jones is worth the trouble, wait for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to reinstate him.

One thing that probably won't change, though, is Dallas' position. Or at least they shouldn't, according to The Dallas Morning News' Jean-Jacques Taylor:
Pacman is eventually coming to Dallas unless some other team shocks the world and decides it can't live without the troubled cornerback. And if that happens, so be it. Dallas has made its offer, and Jerry Jones should let it ride. There's no need to bid against himself.

And if the Cowboys don't get him, that's OK. They don't need him to win the Super Bowl.
I think that's right -- the Titans have no leverage, desperately want to get rid of Jones, and the Cowboys don't absolutely have to have him. I have no idea if he's the last piece to Dallas' Super Bowl puzzle -- the team does have needs at cornerback and returner -- but they have two first-round picks in this month's draft.

Worst-case scenario (that might actually be the best case): pass on Jones and draft a cornerback/returner. Which isn't all that original since every mock draft has Dallas doing just that.
