Bears Offer to Make Tommie Harris NFL's Highest-Paid Defensive Tackle, Harris Says No

Two Chicago Bears want to be among the highest-paid players in the NFL, and the team may have trouble meeting their contract demands.

First there's the Brian Urlacher contract situation, and now Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Bears have made an offer to defensive tackle Tommie Harris that would make him the highest-paid defensive tackle in football -- and Harris said no.

According to Biggs, the offer the Bears made is more than the ridiculous $50 million contract Tommy Kelly signed with the Oakland Raiders in February. Kelly is the highest-paid defensive tackle in the league, and Harris apparently wants more than that.

Without knowing the specifics of how the contract the Bears offered Harris is structured -- we don't know how much of it is guaranteed and how much of it is paid upfront -- it's hard to assess whether Harris and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, are being reasonable. On the one hand, turning down a contract of more than $50 million sounds crazy. On the other hand, Harris is only 24 years old and among the league's elite defensive linemen.

One way or another, Harris will overtake Kelly as the highest-paid defensive tackle in the league. We just don't know how soon or by how much.

(Contract value has been corrected.)
