Trevor Immelman Dares Tiger Woods to Make a Run Tomorrow

Barring a major catastrophe -- like, say, a strategically placed asteroid strike -- Tiger Woods will not be winning his fifth green jacket. I hate to make such proclamations because invariably they blow up in your face, but given the way Trevor Immelman and Brandt Snedeker closed out their respective third rounds, it's hard to imagine Woods making up six stroke over 18 holes. Particularly since, you know, he's never won a major when trailing heading into Sunday.

Still, it's probably foolish to count Woods out, if for no other reason than none of the four players in front of him have won a major (in addition to Immelman and Snedeker, who will again be in the final group, Paul Casey and Steve Flesch will be second-to-last off the tee tomorrow). Of course, Zach Johnson somehow managed to overcome such obstacles last year.

Immelman's in the clubhouse at 11-under, two shots clear of Snedeker, and six shot in front of the fifth-place Woods. And while Snedeker mounted a late rally after bogeying his way around Amen Corner, Immelman was steady all day. The closest he came to making a mistake was on the par-5 15th, when his third shot spun off the green, down the bank, but somehow defied gravity and avoided the water (prompting Jim Nantz to make the obvious historical reference).

He calmly got up and down for par and has now posted three consecutive rounds in the 60s, and perhaps more impressive, he came in in 33 strokes this afternoon.

I know it's never wise to count Tiger out -- even when down by six with 18 to go -- but barring a(n asteroid-induced) miracle, there's a good chance the 2008 Masters champion will be a lot like the 2007 one: a first-time winner.
