On ESPN Radio's Mike and Mike in the Morning today, Mike Greenberg was talking to guest co-hosts Will Perdue and Buster Olney when out of nowhere, Perdue launched into an attack on blogs."When people are writing these blogs, I mean, what do you think about that?" Perdue asked. "I mean, some of these people now live by these blogs on the Internet. What do you think about that?"
Olney gave a fairly noncommittal answer, and Perdue was clearly appalled that Olney wouldn't join him in denouncing blogs. So Perdue continued:
"How much merit do these things have? They're just somebody's opinion," Perdue said. "These guys just write these blogs which is their opinion, next thing you know it becomes fact, and then we're talking about it because it's on some blog that's started by some guy that lives with his mother in an apartment in Hackensack, New Jersey."
Good one, Will. Make fun of bloggers because they live with their moms. And then Greenberg did something extraordinary. He actually brought a little common sense to the discussion.
"Yes, you should not take as gospel the things they say, but on some level everything is just someone's opinion," Greenberg said. "Everything I say on this show is just my opinion."
Yes, we had a member of the mainstream media equating his own opinion with that of the lowly bloggers of the world. And he wasn't done there.
"When someone writes something nasty about us in the New York Post, that's really just one person's opinion, and when someone writes something nasty on a blog, that's also just one person's opinion," Greenberg said. "That opinion is no more or less valid than my own."
Perhaps feeling energized by Greenberg, Olney then came around to say that some blogs provide "excellent baseball analysis." Perdue said nothing more, and they moved on to other subjects. Greenberg, defending blogs, had won the debate.

1. Does anyone at Fanhouse realize how trite and juvenile it is to complain about how the MSM treats blogs, particularly when a member of the MSM goes out of his way to not rip them? Just talk about sports, please. God, and you guys complain about ESPN being all self-obsessed.

3. Most bloggers probably don't even realize how hard they are on MSM announcers and journalists, then get all defensive when somebody slights them.
I wish they respected the alternative point of view a little more, but the sports blogging community shouldn't dish it out if they can't take it.

6. My fondest memory of Will Perdue is a game in Orlando in 95 or 96. Running down the court and tripping over his own feet and the refs actually called a foul on the Magic. The only reason i remember that is because its the single whitest, least graceful nba moment i've ever witnessed. Great job, now go crawl back into that storage bin in MJ's basement where Longley and Wennington live.
