As the draft approaches, it seems increasingly likely that Jeremy Shockey won't be a New York Giant. That is, unless he is. Actually, it's all pretty confusing, even though, in theory, it seems straightforward enough: either he's with the team or he isn't.
Yesterday, FanHouse's Michael David Smith noted that Shockey was okay with all the trade talk, and Giants general manager Jerry Reese wouldn't rule it out. In today's Newark Star-Ledger, Mike Garafolo adds this:
Shockey told the Giants in December he wanted a changed role in the offense or a trade to another team, according to a person familiar with discussions between Shockey, the Giants' coaching staff and front office. The person, who requested anonymity because he isn't authorized to speak on behalf of Shockey or the Giants, said Shockey threatened to sit out the upcoming season if neither request was granted. No idea if the "changed role" included breaking his leg while watching the Giants' offense put it all together on the way to one of the biggest Super Bowl upsets in NFL history. If so, well played, sir. Well played.
Garafolo paints Shockey as something up a buffoon, writing that the Pro Bowl tight end has long complained about his role in Tom Coughlin's offense. Dating back to 2004, Coughlin's first year in New York, Shockey claimed he was becoming "an average player." According to Garafolo, "This came three months after he complained about pre-snap motion, which made him 'tired before I get to my final spot.'"
Nonetheless, I'm quite certain quarterback Drew Brees would happily carve out a niche for Shockey in the Saints offense. He's a giver like that.

1. I think the GIANTS should use "Shock" more out of the backfield as an H-back he is devesating in the run block game and Boss more as a traditional TE. With our OLINE aging a bit and no true LT an all pro LG playing the tackle. We could use the phycallness that two offset TE's or a very talented hback can bring and it would be another look helping the running game and helping blitz pickup
And JShOck can feel like a FieldGeneral helping point out blitz pickups from his hback position
***How deverating would that be to opposing defenses
2 6'5" physical WR to massive 6'6"+ TE that run 4.6 and 265 pound tailback Jacobs or shifty Bradshaw next year?

2. Shockey is the most over rated player in the NFL. It is not a coincidence that the Giants won the Super Bowl without him.

3. OK Guys
Here are the pros and cons..Shockey wants his blocking role with the Giants limited and Gilbrides formations call for mostly Tight end blocking.Shockey would love to reunite with Sawn Peyton in NO. Also, Shockey would like to play closer to home in Miami...not a close friend of our Mr Tuna. Shockey has a 11 million dollar contract in which the Giants will hit a salary cap dilemma. and another 3 mil to pay him on the way out the door, unless another team he goes to picks some of it up..(not likely)soooooooooo. what should Jerry Reese do?
Scenerio with NO...Saints second round pick plus Safety Roman Harpur. Saints offered 3rd, but Reese is holding out for second round. Harpur would be a solid starter and the Giants could draft LB and WR/CB
Miami...Dolphins second round pick for Shockey. That would give the Giants 31 and 32....great win/win for both teams.

5. Shokey is an enigma. He can't run a 4.6 anymore, doesn't have great hands, and has never been famous for running good routes. He's kind of a "me first" guy, and couldn't hold a candle to Mark Bavaro in talent or class.
Having said that I think that he is correct when he says he hasn't been used enough. On the few occasions he has been the focus of the game plan he has done a good job. He can occasionally change the momentum of a game with a spectacular run after catch.
If it wern't for the big cap hit it would precipitate he might already be gone. There is no denying that Boss can be an effective tight end. On the other hand you just can't have enough talent because injury can make you thin at any position in a heartbeat.
It's a tough call, but I'd keep him.

6. An impartial observation agrees with Jerome. Along with winning the BigGame it's no coincidence that Manning became more of a leader when he didn't have some big mouth from the frickin "U" around trying to dictate the offense. Who would you rather have as your leader on offense...the QB or the tight end??

7. If I could get a 2nd round pick for him, I'd trade him in a second.
