Marvin Lewis Encourages Chad Johnson to Sit Out the 2008 Season

I suspect Bengals fans don't see the humor in any of this, but as an outside observer I'd like to applaud Marvin Lewis for calling Chad Johnson's bluff. Johnson has been bellyaching for months about wanting a trade and the Bengals, for months, have declined to honor his wishes.

Ocho Cinco has taken his case to the media and threatened to sit out the season if he's in Cincinnati come September. Lewis, during a Tuesday press conference, kindly offered Mr. Cinco some advice:
"I've stated our case with Chad," Lewis said. "He has a contract through 2011. He's stated without an opportunity to go to a different team and a new contract, he wasn't going to play. I think he's a man of his word and says he's not going to play, so don't play."
Given Chad's moody demeanor this off-season, I'm guessing he didn't take Lewis' suggestion all that well. There is good news, though: even though Johnson unloaded on Carson Palmer last week, the Bengals quarterback isn't holding a grudge:
"I take it with a grain of salt," said Palmer, who is working out with the team in Cincinnati. "I've moved on and I'm over it. I'm not really going to comment on it much more." Asked if the two could get along if Johnson stays, Palmer said, "I've always been a forgiving guy, and I hope he's here because he's a good player, and I hope to see him here."
So if we're to believe Palmer, at least one person in Cincinnati doesn't hate Johnson. The 2008 season is off to a fabulous start.
