Miami Dolphins Will Draft Jake Long, Agree to Contract With $30 Million Guaranteed

The Miami Dolphins have agreed to a contract with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long and will sign him to a contract with $30 million guaranteed, multiple media outlets are reporting.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the contract is a five-year deal worth $57.5 million, which is less total and less guaranteed money than JaMarcus Russell got as the first pick of the Raiders last year, although Russell signed a six-year contract, meaning Long can become a free agent after the 2012 season.

It appears that Long was always the candidate the Dolphins wanted to select. Although there were reports that Ohio State's Vernon Gholston or Virginia's Chris Long could be the pick, there were apparently never any serious negotiations with anyone other than Jake Long, who will be penciled in as the Dolphins' Day 1 starter at right tackle.

UPDATE: Most analysts think Long is better suited to right tackle, at least early in his career, than left tackle. But Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said today that he expects Long to play left tackle.
