Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall is one of the most talented players on the board, and to get him with the 23rd pick represents great value for the Steelers.
In the photo, Mendenhall is scoring a touchdown against USC in the Rose Bowl, and for all the talk that the Big Ten doesn't have any speed, Mendenhall ran wild in that game through one of the fastest defenses in college football.
So why did Mendenhall last until the late first round? It may be that some teams were concerned that he was only a one-year starter at Illinois. But that concern is foolish. This was a very good pick for the Steelers.

We have a top 5 running back in Willie Parker. A guy who was leading the league in rushing before he got injured. We have a D line comprised of guys over 31, no linebacker depth, no receivers past Holmes and Ward, and an abysmal O line. So of course we take a running back. Hey great, you gotta jump at the chance to take a backup RB in the first round. Unbelievably stupid pick.

UHMM..well I think it was a great pick. Im not concerned about a defense that ranked #1 in the league last year. Receivers, yes we need some height, but I think this was a great pick. This guys value is great. Now lets get a nice tall receiver and get the O line playing football again.

rashard mendenhall is an outstanding addition to the steelers!!! not a lot of wear and tear...although we have a pro bowl back in willie, the two back system took us to the super bowl a few years back. It doesnt address the most glaring need for the steelers, but once again allows the run to set up the pass. Mendenhall will add years to willie's career and vice versa. lots of explosiveness in the steelers' offense. good pick colbert! why waste a stretch pick for an offensive lineman when you can get a running back that can take it to the house and relieve pressure off of willie and ben? It was a no brainer...see how fast the pick went in? Immediate impact player starting week 1! Last year willie was leading the league in rushing when he went down, so the offensive line was doing something in run blocking situations...the steelers bread and butter in the past has been the play action pass, slowing down the pass rush while eating more clock with the run. And when needed ben has proven he can spread the d out and pass efficiently and effectively. All positives for the steelers
