One of the storylines heading into Day 2 of the NFL Draft is that the Ravens, after trading out of the eighth pick, moved back up to No. 18 to grab their latest franchise quarterback, Joe Flacco. FanHouse's Josh Alper, like most of us, is skeptical of the selection, but NFL Network's Mike Mayock is here to assuage your concerns, Ravens fans accustomed to mediocre quarterback play.
Here's what he had to offer during this morning's Total Access recap/preview show:
"I had some people make comments to me last night, 'Why did they go back to [the] 18[th-overall pick]? Did they really need to get [Flacco] like that? Come on, how good a football player is this guy?'Um, yeah, Brady Quinn disagrees.
Let me put it in perspective: Brady Quinn -- everybody thought was a top-10 pick last year -- Brady Quinn, as far as physical skill set, can't carry his jock."
Mayock, apparently not actually referring to junk-grabbing abilities, adds: "[Flacco] throws the ball naturally, he's got Pro Bowl potential all over him. Now, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron: it's on you, pal." And if it doesn't work out, just blame Brian Billick.

1. Quinn's played in NFL games and looked like a quality NFL starter. Flacco's played in a fairly small sample size of 1-AA and looked decent.
Mike Mayock gets hard-ons for certain players and he hates other players. He's hated Brady for a while now, and he's been all over Flacco for a while now. His biases are starting to outweigh his positives in player evaluation.

2. Joe Flacco reminds me of Dan Marino with his rocket arm. Joe will succeed if he adjusts to the faster NFL game and his coaches encourage him to fufill his potential.

3. I think it was a waste of a draft pick for the ravens, they have Troy Smith who was awesome in college, and hasent really gotten a chance to prove himself in the NFL...everyones worried about his height whitch is 6'0,personally i think he could get the job done regardless of how tall he is,not to mention Troy also has a great arm and pretty decent speed for a QB he would be a dual threat in the backfieled.I think draftin Flacco was a waste even thou hes also good but they already had a good QB to build on and i think they shoulda just ran with Troy Smith as starter
