David Wright the Next Victim of Carlos Delgado's 'Curtain Call-Gate'

David Wright and Carlos DelgadoIt's pretty amusing that it's already Tuesday and people are still talking about whether Carlos Delgado disrespected the fans by refusing a curtain call last weekend. But hey, after an entire winter pointing fingers at cheating athletes and spending far too much time discussing whose bum was leaking from taking too many steroids, it's actually kind of refreshing to talk about something as mundane and harmless as proper athlete/fan etiquette. It's quaint.

So far only Delgado has been the subject of the fans' wrath, but yesterday Chris Russo of New York's WFAN decided to do a little amateur lip-reading and make David Wright a target, too. From Filip Bondy of the New York Daily News:
Russo said you can tell, if you watched Wright's lips carefully, that the third baseman was urging Delgado to ignore the applause. "I guess there are some great lip readers," Wright said, after refusing to appear on "Mike and the Mad Dog" to explain his alleged stage directions. "It's not my place to suggest to him whether or not to accept a curtain call. It's upsetting to me. I've been kind of drawn into this."
For the record, Wright denies having any thing to do with Delgado's decision. In fact, he said he probably would have given the fans what they want, but respects Delgado's opinion that a solo home run in the seventh inning was not a situation that called for celebration. Said Wright, "He's old school. It might be a generational thing. There are more handshakes and dancing around the dugout than when he came up."

With any luck this non-story will finally die down today, but I won't fault any reporters for squeezing everything they can out of it -- it sure tops being on the Mindy McCready/Roger Clemens beat.
