MLS West Wrap: Quiet on the Western Front

Better late than never with the West Coast recap. Even with the technical difficulties slowing us down here at FanHouse HQ, it was an easy weekend to forget in the Western Conference, with a number of lackluster results for a number of teams. This isn't to say however, that all was quiet out West. LA had its usual dose of fireworks and Colorado certainly had some surprises in store for DC United.

It's getting extremely hard to think that Houston can turn their offense around. Either the woeful Chivas defense has finally figured things out, or the Dynamo's attack is as bad as feared. In an ugly match, 35 shots were fired, yet none landed on goal, but at least Houston got to see their 2007 championship rings in a pregame ceremony. Chances of a repeat look slim to none if the offense stays silent.

FC Dallas 0 - San Jose Earthquakes 0
We promise the exciting parts are coming up next, but first yet another scoreless tie. Of course, its pretty hard for San Jose to get things going in their first game at Buck Shaw Stadium, especially when they only manage a single shot on goal. One shot isn't going to get things done against Dallas, but luckily the Quakes seasoned defense held out for the draw. Arturo Alvarez and Kenny Cooper managed to get some opportunities for Dallas, but they just couldn't break through.

LA Galaxy 2 - Real Salt Lake 2
For about the nineteenth time this season, we want to get on the RSL bandwagon. We really do. They seem like the least of all evils out West (see also the Rapids), and this game got our hopes up from the start. Javier Morales hooked up Fabian Espindola and Kenny Deuchar for a quick pair of goals early in the first half. Of course, before the half was out, David Beckham (scruffy at right) leveled the score. The Galaxy had a number of chances in the second half, but they were snuffed out by Nick Rimando and the RSL defense.

DC United 0 - Colorado Rapids 2
The Rapids home form can be lethal at times, but we starting to be less and less impressed by victories over United. The reloaded DC side has had more than its fair share of struggles, and they're definitely having problems on the road. Jacob Petersen and Facundo Erpen scored in the second half with a little bit of help from ex-United midfielder Cristian Gomez. We have to think Colorado is liking that trade right about now.
