Like many athletes, Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson created a foundation to give back to the community, particularly to kids from single-parent homes. He loves giving away toys to children who have few things.TMZ is reporting that Johnson ordered 750 bikes to purchase for underprivileged children, in exchange for Wal-Mart providing ice and water for the kids' event. There was a problem with the order, so Johnson purchased fewer bikes. The story says that the local Wal-Mart responded to the reduced purchase by not providing the ice and water they promised.
Wal-Mart claims that they are going to rectify the problem with the Andre Johnson Foundation, and I hope they do it, preferably in a financially generous way. In the last quarter, Wal-Mart's net income was $3.022 billion, and last year they reportedly donated $296 million to charitable organizations throughout the United States.
Hugely profitable corporation + superstar do-gooder WR buying bikes + underprivileged kids = no water and ice for event? Something doesn't add up in this story, and I'm guessing there are some strange details. Details, of course, that we want to know about because we are nosy that way.

Maybe Wal-Mart made a honest miskate in not giving away the ice and water to the kids for the event because of a paperwork snafu?

This is news? Walmart has many thousands of employees and does many more good deeds than AOL does...why pick on Walmart? Walmart lifts more people out of poverty than any goverment program and saves American households billions of dollars a year in cost savings...and is spreading capitalism all over the World..even Communist China.
Layoff..and put YOUR money where your mouth..give 10% of your income to poor kids..now..do it today.

" Walmart lifts more people out of poverty than any government program"
What a laugh, why not ask the typical Walmart employee how financially empowered they feel with their low wages and no health insurance.
Ice and Water for the kids is what we are talking about here dowday trader

...now that we've heard the propaganda from the obvious Walmart employees, talk about the real problem....Walmart gets a large purchase and couldn't provide ice and water for these kids? Snafu my rear! I hire ex Walmart employees on a regular basis, and the bad stories you hear about how their employees are treated are true! And, do you really enjoy shopping there? I certainly don't, but no longer have a choice since they have run all other businesses out of town. Have you not noticed how Walmart's partner Murphy Oil sells gas for 15ยข per gallon cheaper than other places? Most of the time they are selling that gas below cost in an attempt to make other stores go out of business!

Figures, Wal-mart is STILL a no good POS corperation. When i worked there, i got paid 0.50 less then some inexperienced kid! {We were doing the same frikkin jobs!}-Wal-mart is sexist-
Also, the only way you could get health insurance benifits is if you WORKED ful time hours for a year and guess what? You don't get full time hours even if you are full time so you can't get it and if you do, you'll prolly have to end up paying it all back if you're hurt.
So now, i shop at locally-owned stores, i'd rather pay a little bit more that give my money to wal-mart.

Wal Mart is one of the biggest contributers to the poor staying poor in this country that exist. Low prices...you bet, for low quality. Compare a pair of Levi jeans you get from wal mart to a pair you get at a reputable men's store. There is a big difference. Wal Mart began the policies that are driving well paying manufacturing jobs overseas. What price are you willing to pay for all of this?
And those are facts!

I am not nor have I ever been an employee of Walmart. In my community there are many businesses other than Walmart to chose when shopping. But I love Walmart. They have many great men and women working there who are friendly to me. However I have observed on some occassions other "customers" being rude and down right mean to some of them. I am convinced that it is just rude people complaining about something they know nothing about. This is America and you should stay away from Walmart if you don't like the way they operate. Just keep yourself at home and stay away from those of us having a wonderful day shopping at Walmart. I also patrinize other businesses in my community.

Melissa, thank you for speaking up. I shop at Wal-Mart occasionally, too. (I would do so more frequently, but with gas prices, I balance my savings on what gas expense I would incur getting there, so reserve it for the once every month or two for staples trip) but I know employees of the company, and they do well. I sell insurance, and I don't have health insurance myself. I could purchase an individual plan, but I can't afford it, as I am the sole bread winner in my hh. But is anyone talking about the BBBBBILLIONS Exxon & Mobile made and holding them accountable for their charitable contributions?

I do feel for most of the Wal-Mart employees but, I
don't see a lot of them eager to do their job and help the customers. When it takes 45 minutes in the
checkout line something is wrong, either with the rank and file employee or the managers. Never enough check out personel at any time of the day. I do trade there and save money but leave there most of the time in a bad mood or mad about something.

Wal-mart does not treat its employees well, I hear that from former and current empoyees all the time. They sell cheap stuff, that is why their prices are cheap. They import most things, notice they don't brag anymore about their American goods. If we don't start supporting the little guy we will lose him and we will be stuck with Wal-mart. Lets see how low their prices are when the competition lessons. As smaller communities what adding wal-mart to their community has meant to local business owners.

Have to give Wal-Mart alot of credit. They have given jobs to thousands of functioning morons. If it was not for Wal-Mart thousands of people would not be working.
So what if some brats didn't have Ice and Water.

I'll pay $4 for a $1 item before I'll go to Walmart. The way they treat their employees is unconscionable, watching their hours like hawks to be sure they don't qualify for benefits, intruding on the personal lives of their employees, suing them when they collect on insurance for severe injuries...it's all very Conservative. Let's all beat up on people who are so unfortunate that they have to resort to working for Walmart to survive.

ok i worked at walmart for years. yes they give you insurance but you pay thru the nose for something called catastrophic insurance. your head explodes-youre covered. you get the flu, strep pneumonia not covered. its all out of pocket for the everyday sicknesses. get pregnant you have to pay for all 9 months, labor and delivery up front. i never knew hunger til i worked for walmart. i was never on welfare or medicaid til i worked for them. i can easily see management going he short changed us so the deal is off. they sent me home for the day unpaid because i was pregnant had diabetes and went to the bathroom twice in an hour. wrote me up for it too when i had a doctors note. talk about fair? not when it comes to walmart. sam should have closed shop once he died

I happen to know that walmart does more than it's fair share for underpriveleged kids, maybe it was an honest mistake due to human oversight or a paper work snafu. KUDOS to Andre Johnson for caring

Wal Mart does a great job of donating all over the world. They also bring in supplies during a crisis. Where is AOL on donations? Stop picking on companies because they make money - they also employ alot of people who might otherwise be out there looking for a job still - they also save people a ton of money on products everyday. Chances are those complaining about Wal Mart on here also shop there.
