All that stands between Brady Quinn and a starting job is Derek Anderson. And barring an injury at some point next season, nothing will change anytime soon. But that doesn't mean Quinn isn't ready to lead should he finally make it on the field.
The Canton Repository's Steve Doerschuk describes Quinn as "patiently optimistic," and head coach Romeo Crennel seems unconcerned about his backup quarterback's current mental state:
... Crennel said the thing that most impressed him about Quinn as a rookie was his ability to lead - whether with backups in the preseason or as the "scout team" QB, often giving the No. 1 defense fits.To be fair, worse quarterbacks than Quinn gave the Browns' defense fits during the 2007 regular season, so I don't know if that means much. That aside, everybody in the organization is still happy with the choice to trade up in the 2007 draft to take Quinn.
Once-promising seasons can be lost along with the starting quarterback, which makes having a competent backup pretty important. That Quinn has grudgingly embraced the position is good news, and depending on how the upcoming season unfolds, the Browns could either look to trade Quinn, or, if Anderson struggles, give Quinn a chance to win the job in 2009.
Whatever happens, Cleveland doesn't have to worry about its quarterback situation for the first time since, what, Bernie Kosar was unceremoniously released by Bill Belichick?

Re-signing Anderson for 3 years was H-U-G-E.That solidifies both QB positions for the foreseeable future, and allows the team to focus on acquiring other needs. The ownership and front office have done a terrific job the last 2 years of rebuilding this team into what is now,a legitimate playoff contender. The expansion decade has now been swept out the door, and it's time for this franchise to take the next step forward.I believe it will do exactly that, and more.

I'll never understand why a team fortunate enough to have a great qb like Quinn - a qb you traded up for in the 1st round of the draft to get - would be so cold as to sign another qb for 3 years and announce publicly that he had no chance of starting. Keep that sort of talk within the locker room. It's one thing if you're trying to build character in a young qb, but character is one thing Quinn has in huge amounts.
Of course, the only reason they are saying all this in the press is because they know that the majority of Browns fans want Quinn to start and could care less if Derek Anderson stays, goes, or falls off the face of the earth.

Let's see, Derek Anderson, one year ago, was a BACKUP to Charlie Frye?? Now he is a true franchise QB? LOL, with last years schedule, Quinn would have been in the Pro Bowl. Now that Anderson is comfortable with his contract, and with the now schedule of a few winning teams, you will see how good your QB really is. Like the Indians last year, and now this year, the Browns will go backwards and Anderson will be an after thought by mid season. Please remember, your talking of a Cleveland team. You better hope Quinn is plugged in soon. One year Anderson cannot beat out Charlie Frye, the next he is a savior,,,,,,lol,,,,,,,,please,

Mike:If calling a 24 yr.old DA,with no experience,Frye's backup makes you feel better about your own teams chances,(I'm sure we all know who that is)by all means, stick your foot in it.But totally ignoring what DA accomplished last year, and then comparing him to a baseball team,is well,stupid.LOL...There have been many QB controversies over the years in the NFL,and Quinn may very well come out on top,but that does not mean Anderson is a nobody. At this point, Anderson deserves to start the season. You seem quite smug in berating an expansion team, but under new management and a talented roster, you better enjoy it while you can.
