NBC reported on today's Preakness broadcast that Three Chimneys Farm has purchased the breeding rights to Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown for more than $50 million. If Big Brown wins the Preakness today and the Belmont in three weeks, that will seem like a bargain. He'll probably be the most valuable stud horse in history even with a loss, but as a Triple Crown winner, he would undoubtedly be the most sought after thoroughbred sire ever.
Of course, in the wake of the death of Eight Belles, there are always major concerns about a horse worth tens of millions of dollars. Big Brown was insured for more than $30 million before he won the Derby, and afterward the policy was increased to $50 million.

It will be a hollow Triple Crown this year because Big Brown has no competition. And his trainer thinks giving his horses steroids is good until he is told different.
This is all about money. The bloodlines have been so diluted these past decades, that "great" horses are few and far between. I think this is sad. Barbaro and Eight Belles bloodlines trace back to Native Dancer who was bred to anybody that had the fee.
Secretariat was the real monster horse but as a stud, he had few foals ever make it in racing.
Do you think NBC could have blown more smoke up the behinds of those connected to Big Brown?
Just wondering.

This year's crop of 3-year-olds is admittedly less than stellar, but to say Big Brown has "no competition" is hopelessly over-simplified
Any horse that can run with credibility in the exhausting Triple Crown schedule, amidst the hysteria that invades the stable area, traveling from one distant track to another, adapting to different surfaces at each, and maintaining a delicate razor-sharp level of fitness over the entire campaign, is not merely competitive, it's heroic!!!!
And yes, it's about the money when you're investing $50 million, but to the average fan, it's about the thrills, majesty, and beauty of the Thoroughbred. Whether it's the Derby, or the last race at
Ellis Park on a Thursday afternoon, to me, it's all about one of the most enduring and profound love affairs in the history of civilization.

Actually Big Brown does have competition.. He's up against the Jap. Horse Casino Drive. Casino is out of Grade 2 winner Better Than Honour, by Deputy Minister, is a half brother to 2006 Belmont winner Jazil and three-quarter brother to ’07 Belmont winner and champion three-year-old filly Rags to Riches. So This should be a very interesting Race.
