Former home run king Hank Aaron was pegged to give the commencement address at Concordia University Saturday; what would he say? It's still only a few months after Barry Bonds broke his all-time home run record and then vanished (against Bonds' will) into the night. Would Aaron discuss it? Or leave it alone? Turns out, he was willing to talk, and willing to speak his peace his with reporters beforehand:
"I still," Henry Aaron was saying, "consider myself the home-run king."Oh, snap! That's more than Aaron has ever said on the matter, either positively or negatively. He then goes on to kinda back off that statement, talking about how Bonds was an incredible player, that he hopes the ordeal is over soon so Bonds can get on with his life, and so forth. Then, in his actual commencement, Aaron went with this:
"This is advice from an old man who has been a lot of places, seen a lot of things," said Aaron, who casts a regal appearance at 74. "Be careful before you make choices. Avoid shortcuts. They are quick fixes and unrewarding."
No word on whether Bonds was wearing a Concordia U cap and gown, but he might as well have been. That was a commencement speech to an audience of one. Which is kind of like an army of one, but with way more steroids and way less self-respect.
These latest words from Aaron are a lot different from the taped message after Bonds hit No. 756.

Hank Aaron is a true American hero, and the fact that he hit a lot of home runs is just icing on the cake. Take the time to read up on the life of Hank Aaron. You'll want to hold that man up as an example to your children. I do. I have coached baseball all all levels up to the collegiate ranks for twenty seven years, and I am truly saddened by the state of the game today. Bonds and Clemens, etc. have disgraced the most incredible game there is. It's a shame. The fact that Bonds, ultimately, hit more home runs than Aaron did is completely irrelevant. Bonds was an entitled little puke who had everything in his life, but was so jealous of the success of others, he did drugs. Hank Aaron pretty much paved the way for you, and YOU should thank him. Mr. Aaron, I'm sure you'll never read this, but if you do, I'd like to thank you for your contributions to America and the children of America. Someday, I'd like to do it in person.

I've had the opportunity to meet both men and they are polar opposites. Hank Aaron (and especially his wife) were two of the nicest people I have met. He actually took the time to talk and seemed genuinely interested. I also met Bonds, and he was one of the most arrogant SOB's I have ever met. Which is strange. I was able to meet his father years ago here in St. Louis and he was the nicest guy as well. Too bad he never set his arrogant son straight.

Hank Aaron may have been the home runking in his time but he may never have had to face a juiced Roger Clemens. If Bonds could talk he might make this exact point. How can a batter stay clean if all around him are not? Or should he? Maybe yes maybe no but it's not a level playing field.
Furthermore, steroids for injuries, such as cortisone can still rev you up and that has been misused too.

Hank Aaron is a hero; Barry Bonds is a zero. Hank Aaron is a class act; Barry Bonds is not. Hank Aaron did not cheat; it appears that Barry Bonds did. End of story.

Hank Aaron is a gentleman and a true role model. Bonds is a petulant, arrogant jerk, who wouldn't have hit even 300 home runs without that body armor he had to wear, let alone the steroids. Hank hit his homers back in the days when pitchers could--and would--come inside on you if you were crowding the plate.
Armor like Bonds wore should be illegal except to protect an injury and even then it should only be allowed as a temporary measure.

Hank Aaron didn't stand there crowding the plate with armor on his forearm, hip and shin like Bonds did. Bonds didn't care if he got hit, its not going to hurt. Pitchers in Aaron's era would put one at your head if you did and didn't have to worry about getting thrown out the way they do today. Imagine Bonds crowding the plate with no protection and Bob Gibson on the mound. He'd be in the dirt. Bonds didn't play with the racist death threats that Aaron did. Plus, Aaron played at a time with bigger ball parks, fewer teams (better pitching) and without all of the advances in technology that the players have today.

This statment is not true:"Furthermore, steroids for injuries, such as cortisone can still rev you up and that has been misused too"
A common treatment for inflammation of tendons, bursa, and joints and it will make you feel better.
Repeated cortisone injections are not healthy for tissues Small amounts of cortisone in the body are probably reasonable, but repeated injections can cause damage to tissues over time. Sometimes this is of little concern. For example, if a patient has severe knee arthritis, and a cortisone injection every 6 months helps significantly, then the number of injections probably does not matter too much. On the other hand, if a patient has shoulder tendonitis, but an otherwise healthy shoulder, the number of injections should probably be limited to prevent further damage to these tendons.
