In another clear sign that the league wants the Colts and Peyton Manning to win multiple championships, NFL owners awarded Indianapolis the 2012 Super Bowl. I might be embellishing a bit, especially since Manning will be 35 when the big show comes to Naptown (although no doubt still playing, and playing well), and the Colts lost out to the Cowboys for the right to host the game last season.
With less competition and a shiny new stadium, Indianapolis was selected over Houston and Arizona, two cities that have hosted Super Bowls in the past four years. And while owner Jim Irsay is understandably thrilled about the news, the city of Indianapolis is the big winner:
Mayor Greg Ballard said the experiences of past host cities suggests that Indianapolis can expect 100,000 visitors and an infusion of about $120 million into the local economy.Added bonus: Indy in February. It'll be just like Detroit but without access to the Canadian strip clubs.
"This was truly a community bid. It began with a process of involving anyone interested in being a part of it, and ended with our 8th grade ambassadors flying all over the country to hand-deliver our final bid package."

Of Course every football fan would want to be in Indy the end of January, nice weather, about 10 degrees with a wind chill of -10 degrees and a foot of snow. You know Houston and Phoenix would only supply sunshine and temps between 60-70 degrees and you could even get a couple rounds of golf included. Sure Indy will have a new stadium, has anyone seen where it is located? Slum City.

Indianapolis is attractive, compact and cheap. They've had experience hosting major events (500, F4, Big10, NBA Finals, etc) with great success too. And the city will continue to shine brighter than it's neighboring cities like Detroit, Louisville, Cincy, St. Louis, and Columbus.

Great! Think of all the things we can do in Indy! We can go to the Olive Garden, and there's the World's Largest Wooden Spoon, and.....

if we are having the super bowl in northeastern cities and cities that experience actual winter weather, why not take it to the next step and have the game hosted by the team with the best record--
what a novel idea--give the fans a chance to watch THEIR team compete for the championship-weather be damned!! There will always be enough tickets for the high-rollers to get to the game. Make the super bowl
a real championship affair --with the home crowd a definite advantage--just like all the games and playoffs are now-EXCEPT the Super Bowl.

The reason that the NFL gave Indianapolis a Super Bowl is because of the new stadium that the Colts have and the fact that the Super Bowl officials like the game played in new stadiums.

Who cares? 99.99999% of fans are going to watch it on TV anyways so what's the big deal? If you're one of the fortunate few to garner seats via the corporate troft just enjoy the game. Don't want your seats.....there is lots of people willing to take them off your hands. Don't like Indy Mark? Don't go. Nobody cares that you're pissed.

Bill Rennie, nice idea except it takes about a year (if not more) for the host city to get everything lined up to host the game. Can you imagine the hotel crunch?? Yeah, i need to reserve the presidential suite, we'll be arriving in ummm 5 days.
In Houston the city had to re-route some major roads and alter the construction schedule of local light rail lines just to make sure Reliant Stadium wasn't in the middle of a nasty construction zone.
Playing the super bowl in the best team's city just won't work. of course, in 2011 the host Cowboys will be playing in the super bowl in their home stadium, but that's more a function of scheduling serendipity.

My boyfriend has called me a "Hater" and just today... "Mother Teresa" Well maybe I just see the World a little differently... Ok yes we have a SuperBowl party every year and that may make me a little hypocritical but I just cannot understand why we had to bribe... opps bid 25 Million dollars for one single sports event, 25 Million Dlooars for a one day event. Oh yeah it is supposed to help the community (not mine of course I will still be working my tail off for $10 an hour) and it will provide a high school on the east side with an athletic program/building and materials... oh and some turf... but what will it do for the everyday citizens who battle high gas prices, making the choice between enough groceries to feed your families or gas to get back and forth to work or the homeless people that will be driven from downtown by the bright ideas of the city... just starting with the "donation boxes" that will supposedly diminish pan handling. The Financial Beneficiaries of this event are rich and them saying that the "Community" will be benefitting are just saying that to appease the average person who may begin to think for themselves but seem satisfied with such a weak promise. I want to know who's community are they talking about... mine will likely suffer rent hikes and gas prices will still be ridiculous. In San Diego the years right before the superbowl the city began pushing the homeless and lower income families to the out skirts of the city by raising the rents and property value, and by lowering the rents in the cities outskirting communities. Also how can any city or government be okay with spending $25 Million when there are still people in New Orleans, Alabama and parts of Mississippi without homes, LOST to the rest of the world. And before you dismiss the homeless as drug addicts or worthless please understand alot of them are veterans or the mentally ill, and although this whole rant/blog may seem naive, I'm not I just know we would do more for another country during a crises then we have for our own, its documented. Thanks for letting me vent!
