When Pedro Martinez revealed earlier this week that he was thinking about retiring at the end of the season, he cited wanting to spend time with his parents as one of the reasons why. His father, Pablo, was diagnosed with brain cancer over the winter, and Martinez admitted that it's something that's been on mind all year.Unfortunately, it's on his mind even more so today. Martinez arrived in Atlanta today expecting to throw a bullpen session to test his shoulder, but instead learned soon after landing that his father had suffered a setback in the Dominican Republic. According to Newsday's David Lennon, Martinez immediately got on a plane to be with his family.
Expect the Mets to give him as much time as he needs -- there are more important things in life than finding the elusive fifth starter to bolster a rotation.
