Willie Randolph's Grave Is All But Dug

After his little "Is it race?" gaffe, and the subsequent round of apology, Willie Randolph would be correct in thinking himself all but fired from his job as manager of the Mets. Even if he had delivered an Obama-esque inspirational speech to the media (instead of, say, comparing himself to Isiah Thomas), Randolph had to feel close to the precipice. He should now feel even closer:
Randolph tried to reach out to the Mets' owners Wednesday, getting no response before he publicly apologized for the comments he made recently suggesting he was portrayed in a different manner than white managers. Randolph and Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon usually speak often, which seems to make the Wilpons' decision not to return Randolph's call telling. Wilpon declined to comment Thursday when contacted by 1050 ESPN Radio.
You know how, when your girlfriend or boyfriend and you talk four or five times a day for three months? And then one day, out of nowhere, he or she goes off the grid completely, and no matter how many texts or phone calls or desperate emails you send, you don't get a response? That's when you know the break-up is coming. Intercept. Preempt. Get out of there, as fast you can.

That's about how Willie's feeling right now. Or, if he isn't, he should be.
