If Troy Polamalu Jumped Off a Bridge, Would All the Other Steelers Do It, Too?

FanHouse's JJ Cooper previously showed off this video of Steelers safety Troy Polamalu working out, but it's worth taking another look:

That second look is necessary because John Harris of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review has written a column about Polamalu's off-season workouts that is, frankly, stupid. Harris notes that the Steelers have given Polamalu their blessing to work out on his own rather than participate in organized team activities, and then he writes:
If the Steelers are so comfortable with Polamalu missing OTAs to train on his own because they are only voluntary workouts, why bother having OTAs at all? Why not permit players to train on their own?
Let me try to spell this out as plainly as I can: The Steelers are not comfortable with all their players working out on their own because not every player is Troy Polamalu.

Polamalu is one of the best defensive backs in the league. He's a smart player who's a student of the game and knows his role in the Steelers' defense. He's dedicated to keeping himself in shape and has a personal trainer in California whose methods work for him. And he's coming off an injury that that personal trainer is helping him rehabilitate.

Remember when you were a kid and you told your parents you wanted to do something because your friend did it, and your parents asked, "If he jumped off a bridge, would you do it, too"? Well, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin isn't going to have to use that response when players come to him and ask whether they can miss OTAs because Polamalu is missing them. That's because all the other Steelers know perfectly well that Polamalu is a unique case. The only person who doesn't know that is John Harris.
