Although I have mixed feelings about the overall quality of the mixed martial arts show that EliteXC and CBS put on Saturday night, I am glad that the reputation of Gus Johnson as one of America's best sports broadcasters emerged unscathed. Here's how Johnson called the end of the Kimbo Slice-James Thompson fight:
Johnson showed his trademark enthusiasm for the event, but when referee Dan Miragliotta stepped in and stopped the fight, awarding the bout to Slice, Johnson shouted "Terrible stoppage! Terrible! Terrible! ... James Thompson was not ready to go down! Horrendous!"
Then Johnson stepped into the cage with Slice for the post-fight interview and noted twice that the stoppage was "controversial." There were concerns that CBS would sugarcoat its coverage of EliteXC, but Johnson didn't let that happen.

I watched that circus last night beginning to end. It was fairly entertaining. The fighters talent level was definitely a few levels below UFC. Still entertaining though.
I'll give Gus Johnson all the credit in the world though. He did a GREAT job. He's obviously done his homework coming into the night. For someone doing their first MMA fight, he came across as very informed and knowledgeable.
I would LOVE to see him team up w/ Joe Rogan to cover UFC.

Kimbo Slice is a phony. He is being hyped to make money. His story about fighting in backyards is probably phony too, fake fights on grainy footage on youtube. Kimbo Slice is no MMA fighter, complete fraud. WAKE UP EVERYBODY!!!!!

the reason this fight was stopped short is quiet simple. because it was on network tv. you see, this fight brought out a lot of casual, uneducated fans; and if the fight wasn't stopped immediatly when thompson was unable to defend himself, the casual, uneducated fan would have went back to thinking the sport was a lawless, human cockfight again. completely unbased, but why let facts get in the way of your opinion right? people from stupid human rights groups would have gone nuts if someone had been seriously injured, because this is their first real exposure to the sport. now, stopping the fight a tad early causes some real fans to get unruly. however, not nearly as unruly as the people from human rights groups had this fight gone on and someone been hurt. those people don't shut up

Terrible match... the fix was in... listen to the referee in the 2nd when Thompson had Kimbo on the ground smoothered and raining down elbows.. the ref said something like, nothing going on here and was about to stand them up... with his arms pinned and not able to defend himself, a true ref would have stopped the fight right there... CBS + EliteXC + Kimbo = FIX + FRAUD

This fight was a sham, Kimbo has neither the talent or stamina to fight a real contender. It was the second fight on that card that was stopped prematurly. One must wonder if Prime-Time television is ready for MMA events. It is obvious that the Referee's were instructed to keep the violence factor to a minimum.
UFC or WEC reruns are better viewing.

I agree Mike.. this was for the new fans and the human rights people would have had a hay day if someone got real hurt... the "bombs" he took in the 3rd did rock him, but so did the ones he took in the 1st and 2nd... the ref got scared after the 2nd that Kimbo might lose...

I concur with most. They would have looked awful if Slice had been defeated, Yes, Thompson was hurt BUT he had been hurt several times before that and continued. One more takedown and Slice was had.
Notice when the fight ended how Slice fell to the canvas and remained there for SEVERAL minutes. He was EXHAUSTED. That surge at the beginning was his last hurrah and he took it and the ref gave it to him. If you notice the clips when Thompson was knocked against the cage (just prior to the stoppage) how Slice was wavering with his legs. HE WAS SHOT! At the post fight interview he could hardly breathe and quickly ended it.
He has NO stamina nor ground fighting ability. Any decent opponent would finish him if he gets past the initial blows. Slice is a media creation. Something like one of the presidential candidates--sorry, couldn't contain myself.
