Cedric Benson: I Aced the Field Sobriety Test

Cedric Benson will be in Chicago for the latest round of Bears OTAs today and will meet with Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith about his latest arrest at some point this week. According to the Chicago Tribune, he'll also be making his first public comments about the early Saturday morning traffic stop that's added to the likelihood that he'll lose his job with the Bears.

He's made some less public statements about his innocence, though, including a text message sent to Peggy Kusinski of WMAQ-TV in Chicago.
"I ACED THE FIELD TEST, CHECK THE VIDEO"
Benson had better hope that the video, unreleased as yet, backs up his assertion. The police report, unsurprisingly, says that he was swaying and staggering as he walked but the final proof will be in the video.

Still, Benson's job may not be saved by the video. The fact that he found himself with alcohol in his system, by his own admission, and behind the wheel of a car at 3 AM isn't likely to engender much sympathy from Bears brass. They seem to be okay with a Benson-less future.
"I love Matt Forte," Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner said Sunday during a break at the Bears Expo. "He will definitely be an every-down back. He's got the size, he's got the hands. He's smooth as an athlete, very smooth."
Being carful and protective are keys to holding onto the ball, but they're also keys to holding onto your job. Benson may have fumbled the latter away for good.
