Legendary NFL/AFL and Summer Olympics Announcer Charlie Jones Dies
Legendary football announcer Charlie Jones has died. He was 77.
Jones covered NFL games ... as well as American Football League games ... for 38 seasons. He started doing AFL games on ABC back in 1960, then moving to NBC to due both AFL and NFL games in 1965. He would continue to do so until 1997 when NBC lost its NFL coverage to CBS.
He also did Olympics coverage for NBC in 1988, 1992 and 1996, as well as golf and tennis coverage.
He was defined by his soft, yet deep voice which seemed to just melt into the game action. His most recognizable moment came as the announcer for NBC during Super Bowl I.
Jones died of an apparent heart attack in San Diego.

Death comes in threes. First Jim McCay and Tim Russert and now Charlie Jones. Charlie was one of the best jouranlists who didn't insult Debi Thomas over her Olympic faux pas and treated her with respect unlike his successor Dick Enberg for had a field day insulting Debi when she skated at the professional level after 1988. Charlie will be sorley missed. How come the tv networks are not making a big deal like they did with Jim McKay?
