FanHouse's Will Brinson noted today that ESPN's Jemele Hill wrote a column Saturday that said rooting "for the Celtics is like saying Hitler was a victim. It's like hoping Gorbachev would get to the blinking red button before Reagan."That choice of words has now led to Hill being placed on leave, The Big Lead reports that ESPN issued this statement:
"Both Jemele and ESPN.com apologize. The column, as originally posted, made some absolutely unacceptable comparisons. We've spoken with Jemele, and she understands that she exercised poor judgment. She's been relieved of her responsibilities for a period of time to reflect on the impact of her words. Within hours of its posting on Saturday evening, the inappropriate references were removed from the site, but our system of checks and balances failed Jemele and our readers and we are addressing that as well."Stating she was "relieved of her duties for a period of time" is a strange way of saying she was "suspended," but that's what this is. ESPN's most recent high-profile suspension was the one given to Dana Jacobson for her comments at the Mike and Mike roast. Jacobson got a week; no word on whether the ESPN brass considers Hill's offense to be better, worse or the same.
UPDATE: An ESPN spokesman has e-mailed me Hill's personal apology, after the jump.
Jemele Hill's personal apology:
"I deeply regret the comment I made in a column Saturday. In expressing my passion for the NBA and my hometown of Detroit I showed very poor judgment in the words that I used. I pride myself on an understanding of, and appreciation for, diversity - and there is no excuse for the appalling lack of sensitivity in my comments. It in no way reflects the person I am. I apologize to all of my readers and I thank them for holding me accountable. This has been an important lesson for me and illustrates that, like many people, I still have a lot of growing and learning to do."

Just wondering how the comment got by the editor. Just thinking the blame should be spread around a bit.

This latest comment was just the natural progression of Jemele's well-documented career. ESPN can't possibly be surprised. Prior to working for ESPN she wrote for the Orlando Sentinel, and at every chance used sports to deliver a racially stirring agenda. It was never about the game. Ever.
Thank you, ESPN, for getting her out of O-town.

CELTICS HAVE NO CLASS, THEY KNEW THAT THEY HAD GAME 6 WON BY THE 4TH QUARTER AND THEY CONTINUE SHOOTING 3 POINTERS WITH 10 SECONDS LEFT ON THE SHOT CLOCK INSTEAD OF RUNNING OUT THE CLOCK, THEY REALLY WANTED T0 RUN UP THE SCORE AND RUB IT ON THE LAKERS FACE. CELTICS SWAGGER IS TOO MUCH THEREFORE THEY DON'T DESERVE ANY KIND OF RESPECT. KG PERHAPS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT DESERVES A RING, AND HE TOO HAVE A SWAGGER. THE BETTER TEAM WON. BOSTON HAS A BETTER CHEMISTRY AND A BETTER BENCH THEIRFORE I WILL GET THEM THEIR PROPS, BUT TO MUCH OF A IGNORANT FRANCHISE.

Agree or not I still thought there was freedom of speech in this country...Chris Berman has the most disgusting mouth of anyone on ESPN, and yet they as a network want to turn their head the other way...sounds like a double standard to me.

The Celtics did not run up the score. They simply wanted their fans a show by beating up their nemesis. Jemele was wrong for her comments about rooting for the Celtics comparing them to Adolf Hitler. I wonder if any Caucasian female jouranlists would like to challenge her to a fight since when Rush Limbaugh was fired for his Donovan McNabb comments a New Orleans sports writer said he wanted to knock Rush's socks off for insulting his Afro American brother. Jemele just root for your Detroit teams and don't mention Hitler in a positive way.

Steve, the First Amendment only guarantees the government will not interfere in your freedom of expression. Your employer can do any number of things, on the other hand, to restrict speech. Why? Because Jemele Hill represents ESPN.

I don't want to hear about the celtics running it up damuziqdoctor. If i recall in game 5 against the spurs Vujacic shot a three while the spurs were walking off the court. Even Doug Collins called him out for that.

As a German fan who used to live in New England, loved it there, and still roots for the Celtics let me say this: What happened more than sixty years ago was an autrocity of a magnitude that we shall never fully comprehend. To use it as a reference in sports (basically a game of no greater meaning than simply to entertain us) is not only wrong, it shows a lack of class, education and compassion undeserving of the memory of those, who lost there lives, families and homes in one of the darkest chapters of human society.
ESPN should be ashamed. Jemele Hill shows neither class nor intelligence. The only thing she shows plenty of is ignorance.

She needs to be fired now. Why wait? She has terrible judgement and is old enough to accept the fact that her actions have consequences.
She is a fool and while I accept her apology, I still think she needs to be fired. What kind of example are we showing our children that it is perfectly appropriate to be so insensitive to an entire race of people? I will not watch ESPN and will boycott any ESPN advertisers until this woman is fired.

Sorry to hear about Ms. Hills suspension. Guess she feels like Imus did over a year ago. Though I doubt she will get a multi-million dollar contract from another News outlet like Imus did.
Sorry Ms. Hill. What's good the goose is good for the Gander.

I just waiting to hear the Rev. Al Sharton's comments. Is he going to call for Jessica Heslan's firing. If not, why not? Did you ever notice he never says anything bad about his own race?

Lets not also forget Don Imus, an entertainer/comedian, was speaking off the top of his head in the moment. Jemele actually wrote, and presumably edited her comments. I too am waiting for everyone calling for Imus to be fired comes out against Ms. Hill. I wont hold my breath.

Why isn't she being canned? She lobbied hard and perhaps rightfully so to have Imus canned. What makes her different or what she said different?

Thank god. It's about time they got rid of her, and it is even better it is her own fault. She has been the worst writer on their staff and just likes to create controversy.

Forget about her obvious lack of good judgment, her reporting in general is rather amateur and biased. I remember an episode of "Rome is Burning" where she completely disrespected Floyd Mayweather. I was disgusted even more than I usually am with Jim Rome himself, and that is saying something. I feel that ESPN's "personalities" have all shifted to making a name for themselves rather than giving the viewer an intelligent and accurate report.

Where is the freedom of speech? I think Her comment was not offensive ! at all. It was probablyninterpreted by David Stern --- NBA commissioner (a jewish) the racist way.
Still after so many years , Jewish continue to
persecute the nazis,; they are the racists!
