The NHLPA just released some of the most hotly anticipated numbers in the hockey world: The NHL team payroll range for the 2008-09 season. According to the NHLPA release, the minimum salary will be $40.7 million, the "Adjusted Midpoint" will be $48.7 million and an "Upper Limit" of the cap will be $56.7 million.Undoubtedly, our friends at NHLNumbers.com and NHLSCap.com will be busy recalculating their irreplaceable online spreadsheets for each team. Over the past few days, Do Thrashers Have Large Talons has been compiling some salary cap information, including rough estimates of just how much space each team has under what had been assumed to be a $56 million cap, as well as an historical look at how much cap space each team has used over the past three seasons under the new CBA.
For those of you who want a look backwards, the first NHL salary cap introduced before the 2005-06 regular season was $39 million. The cap in 2006-07 was $44 million. Last season it was $50.3 million. So much for the idea that the new CBA was going to get salaries under control -- but you already knew that.
Blame the Loony.
