In Soviet Russia, contract signs you!Or, in this case, the Rangers' Jaromir Jagr. This morning reports have broken that the 36-year old Czech has been presented with a monster offer from Omsk of the Russian Super League -- three years, $35 million. That's a huge offer and comes right before Jagr is scheduled to hit the NHL's open market on Tuesday.
At just over $10 million a year, it's a hefty offer and one that NHL teams are going to have trouble matching. Despite the $6.5 million increase in the salary cap, I don't see an NHL team matching the length and the value of Omsk's offer. $10 million three years from now for a 39-year old Jagr? I don't think that excites anyone other than Jagr and his agent. All this puts the decision squarely on where Jagr wants to finish out his career. America or Russia?
After the Rangers finished out their season, Jagr said all the right things.
"I don't have 30 teams to choose from," the New York captain said. "First, I am going to talk to the Rangers. That's the number one option for me."But money talks. And $35 million says a lot. Stay tuned, folks.
