DeSean Jackson Lays Groundwork for 2007 Heisman Candidacy

When you're preternaturally fast and elusive and get involved in sports, good things tend to happen to you. Such is the case with Cal receiver DeSean Jackson who just added his fourth punt return touchdown of the year, a 90+ yard effort.

Overall it was his 12th touchdown of the year, just one of many that have been particularly exciting and for long yardage. It was yet another score certain to be seen on the evening highlights.

Update: Jackson just took a little curl route and made his usual magic, taking it for a 62-yard score to put an otherwise listless California offense up 17-3 over Arizona with 6:14 left in the second quarter. It is Jackson's second touchdown today and his 13th overall.

Unlike most receivers, Jackson has a halfway decent chance to win the award because he is a kick returner. I refer you to HeismanPundit's Heismandment No. 1:
1. The winner must be a quarterback, a running back, or a multi-threat athlete.
Jackson's totals this year heading into this game:

39 Receptions, 680 Yards, 17.4 Average, 8 Touchdowns
19 Punt Returns, 327 Yards, 17.2 Average, 3 Touchdowns

He's not unlike Ohio State's Ted Ginn, but has been more productive two years into his career (1,281 Rec. Yards/15 Touchdowns vs. 1,162 Rec. Yards, 6 Touchdowns). Jackson will have to overcome Cal's limited Heisman credentials, but chances are he'll be the best offensive player on one of the nation's top teams next year which should take him far.
