Pacman Jones May Start In Place of Terrence Newman Against Browns

He hasn't played in an NFL game in over a year ... but Adam DigDug Pacman Jones may be a starting CB on Sunday when the Dallas Cowboys visit the Cleveland Browns.

Terrence Newman has been sidelined with a groin injury and may not be ready on Sunday.
Coach Wade Phillips said the team has limited Newman's activities in practice the last two days as a precaution. If Newman isn't ready, Adam Jones will start at left corner despite missing the entire 2007 season.

A decision could be made today.

"I don't think he's completely back yet," Phillips said. "That's why I say we're being cautious. We want to see how it feels [today]."

Newman could play as a nickel or dime back -- limiting the amount of plays he'd be on. Hopefully, it won't keep him off the roller coasters.

Tom Brady's Old Man Knows Nothing of a Broken Foot, Still Expects Son to Play Sunday

This morning, PFT posted a link to Boston radio station WEEI reporting that an August MRI revealed a cracked bone in Tom Brady's foot. This, apparently, is news to Brady's old man, Tom Sr.
The information ran counter to what Brady Sr. had previously discussed with his son.

"He did tell us that he had stress on the bone, and that's why he wore a [protective] boot for a day – one day," Brady Sr. said. "He has never told us that he had any broken bones or fractured bones in his foot. All I knew is that he had stress on a bone, and there is a difference there."
You see, Thomas the Elder, this is what happens when you have a family member join a cult. The symptoms couldn't be more obvious if Junior had his fridge stocked with Kool-Aid and kept talking about moving to northwestern Guyana.

Brady Sr. did admit that he didn't directly ask his dream-tastic son about the injury, and it could very well be true. Surprisingly, head coach Bill Belichick wasn't interested in getting into specifics, but he did say that he expects Brady to play against the Chiefs Sunday.

Seriously, is sounds like he'll be fine; Brady won't be the first guy to play injured, and if we learned anything from Super Bowl XLII, it's that he can take a hit. Or a bunch of them. Still, Jason Whitlock thinks Belichick should give Matt Cassel a chance to lose his first NFL start, but I just don't see that happening.

Tommie Harris' Tweaked Knee Dooms Bears Defense Heading Into Opener

Until yesterday, the Bears never mentioned the fact that Tommie Harris hadn't practiced since August 21st to the media. He didn't play the final preseason game, but it was said to be precautionary -- like, "we can't possibly risk heading into the season without our defensive line's anchor." Unfortunately, it looks as though the Bears may have to cross that bridge, despite being in a state of denial:
A source said the Bears' medical staff has expressed concern Harris' knee injury might be more serious than the team first thought, but team officials rejected that idea Tuesday night.
We'll know more when the NFL injury reports are released -- they are due to the league today -- but a dark cloud is looming over the team right now. Tommie Harris is a stud, simply put. If you are Lovie Smith, leading a team with so many question marks heading into the season, you'd like to be able to not worry about your pro bowl defensive tackle.

Ravens' Kyle Boller Out for Season

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Kyle Boller will miss the entire season with a shoulder injury after the team confirmed that he is on injured reserve today.

Boller is in the final year of his contract, and there's a good chance that he has played his last game in a Ravens uniform. With Boller gone, the only quarterbacks on the Ravens' roster with any experience at all are Troy Smith and the recently signed Todd Bouman.

The quarterback situation has been uncertain for much of the off-season, as the Ravens selected Joe Flacco out of Delaware in the first round of the draft, but were expected to bring Flacco around slowly as the backup to Boller. That changes now. Flacco is the man, Smith and Bouman will back him up, and Boller will be watching from home.

Jon Jansen Is Unhappy About Not Starting for the Redskins Anymore

Redskins head coach Jim Zorn made his first real bold move in his new team by demoting right tackle Jon Jansen in favor of Stephen Heyer.

It is really simple: Heyer has looked good in the preseason while Jansen hasn't. Still, Jansen doesn't see it that way:
"I'm disappointed that I'm not going to be out there," Jansen said. "I still believe myself to be the right tackle here, but it's not going to be that way on [Thursday], and that's what I have to deal with."

Jansen was given some explanations for the change, but "nothing that I felt was reason enough," he said. Zorn said the decision to go with Heyer was very difficult, citing the ability to best protect the passer as a key factor.

Jansen is the longest tenured Redskin and has started in every game he's played since being drafted in 1999. Jansen never missed a start in his first five seasons but has missed all of 2004 and nearly all of the 2007 season.

Jerry Porter, Optimistic as Ever, Returns to Practice and Tells Everyone He's 'Fine'

The news that Jerry Porter has returned to practice is pretty outstanding, if only because I don't believe anyone thought he would be back this soon. But he is. And he's practicing and apparently might even play on Sunday against the Titans.
Wide receiver Jerry Porter was which means he'll play against the Bills in two weeks and may even play Sunday.

"I'm fine, I'm fine," said Porter.

Porter said Jack Del Rio told him the same thing he told the media which is that he would be available in two weeks and is leaving all decisions about playing time up to the coaches.
Ah, well, nevermind then. I can't imagine Del Rio flipping on that decision and suddenly deciding to let Porter run this week. The Titans game is obviously a big one (in division and all), but I would also think that Del Rio wants Porter healthy for the entire season rather than just the first half of the first game.

So, feel free to ignore anything Porter actually says about his condition until Coach D-R actually gives him the thumbs up to play.

Fantasy Spin: Uh, yeah. Snag him quickly if he somehow is available in your league. Porter might not be a season changer but he's healthy and the only legit receiving option on the Jaguars, he's going to be a steal as a WR3.

Hasselbeck Will Start Sunday, Provides Somewhat Encouraging News Re: His Status

Good news for Seattle Seahawks fans: Matt Hasselbeck will start on Sunday. Bad news: he's a little concerned about things like "rust" and his "back".
The Pro Bowl quarterback will start Sunday in Buffalo and he says he will likely be rusty. He's played just two series of a preseason game since last January's playoff loss at Green Bay.

Hasselbeck revealed his back was in pain and spasms for weeks following a practice incident days before the first preseason game Aug. 8 at Minnesota. He said Monday he isn't anxious over how he will feel getting hit Sunday for the first time in almost nine months. He says that's an all-too-familiar feeling.
I'm not the only one who knows that "weeks" is several weeks, and that August 8 was like "several weeks" ago, right? I mean, not to be pessimistic, but if I'm a Seahawks fan, I'm not particularly confident with that.

Of course, the other options are Charlie Frye and Seneca Wallace, so I guess I'd probably be willing to ignore the possibility that the 'Back wasn't going to be healthy and just hope for the best.

Browns Get Anderson and Edwards Back In Practice, Cleveland Panic Delayed

The Brady Quinn era just can't seem to gain any sort of momentum, can it? Meanwhile Notre Dame fans throw a hissy fit and everyone else just laughs. Ha.

Anyway, we have some great news for everyone that actually wants the Browns to have a successful season ... Derek Anderson and Braylon Edwards both returned to practice today. As long as there are no unforeseen setbacks, you can expect the Pro Bowl air attack duo to be on the field against the Cowboys this Sunday (seriously, it's less than a week until the NFL starts ... I can't even stand the anticipation). This is huge news for the Brownies, as heading into a game against the NFC's likely best team without Edwards and Anderson had the recipe for disaster ... which would have been followed by the entire Cleveland fan base's ushering in a state of panic.

Now everyone can exhale. They'll only lose by two touchdowns instead of four.

Vince Young's Hand Is Doing Just Fine So Please Stop Asking About It Now

The Tennessee Titans know that Vince Young is an important part of their team; they can win, as evidenced in 2007, without him taking the entire team on his back, but it sure doesn't hurt for him to play well. Or to be healthy.

Which is why it's probably disconcerting for Titans fans to hear that Vince Young banged his hand against someone's helmet and needed to be walking around with it taped recently.

But not for Jeff Fisher. He doesn't see anything wrong with this situation and everything is fine and practice is just going swell and no one's injured and everyone's going to be alright for the season opener and OH GOD STOP ASKING ME QUESTIONS.
Fisher repeated after a brief practice Sunday that Young has no problems.

"We're not downplaying anything,'' Fisher said. "There are no issues. There will be no surprises as far as our quarterback is concerned."
Okay, so maybe I exaggerate a little. Still, it's pretty funny to hear Fisher telling everyone just how fine and dandy everything is when VY is clearly injured. Clearly. And while no one's worried about the injury affecting his deep ball to Justin McCareins, how the hell is he supposed to run with that thing all banged up?

Fantasy Spin: I don't think I want anything to do with VY this year, personally. He needs too much work on the passing game to really be a worthwhile fantasy QB. Also, his receivers should probably be avoided for now.

Jason Taylor Might Be Sitting With Osi Umenyiora in the Season Opener

The Jim Zorn era officially begins on Thursday, when the Redskins face the Giants in the regular-season opener. Despite a shiny, new offense and a retooled roster that includes a less insane punter, Washington has struggled on both sides of the ball during the preseason.

The team traded for Jason Taylor after Phillip Daniels was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Taylor would later injure his knee in the 'Skins' third preseason game and now it looks like he won't be available for Week 1.
Jason Taylor, who is out with a sprained knee/bone bruise, worked before practice with trainers but did nothing on the practice field. He, too, seems unlikely to play, but Zorn said the team will evaluate him right up through Thursday's warm-ups before making a final call. "Based on today, there's no way, but that's going to be a game-time decision." ...
Told ya. More proof that God has something against Dan Snyder: No. 2 wideout Antwaan Randle El has a broken bone in his left hand. He'll play against the Giants, however, but will have to wear a protective brace. That should hinder his ability to catch the ball.
