According to the Kansas City Star:Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen was charged Friday with driving under the influence after a police officer pulled him over for driving erratically earlier this week, police said.Terrific.
Police said another motorist called dispatch about Allen, saying he appeared to be impaired. When Allen was pulled over at 135th Street and Roe Avenue in Leawood, he refused a Breathalyzer test and was arrested, police said.
My hat goes off to you, Jared Allen. Your mistake may have put the city of Kansas City into a full coma. Chiefs' fans have had to deal with watching a 2nd-string quarterback back up one of the best in the game. They've had to deal with learning that their starting left tackle is experiencing back problems that once sidelined him for a very extended period of time. They've had to deal with an 0-2 start, a tough loss in Denver, ever-changing reports about when Green will come back, ever-changing reports about IF Green will come back. Now they have to deal with the fact that they may lose their defensive end for a few games because he couldn't find the common sense to call a cab (for a second time, mind you). Now they have to deal with you? At least Green and Turley are victims of accidents they could not avoid.I am dying for the Chiefs to win this Sunday, but screw it. Sit Jared Allen on Sunday. Hopefully, Herm Edwards will do what Marvin Lewis has failed to do in Cincinnati: show players that there are actual consequences to off-the-field stupidity. I realize that Jared Allen is a difference maker. I want Allen to play more than anything, because he is easily the guy on the field most capable of disrupting the 49ers' passing game. I know Allen is innocent until proven guilty. I know that benching Allen is a semi-admission of guilt, but this might be the only chance that the Chiefs have to teach Allen a lesson--he apparently did not learn it the first time. Nothing, in my mind, could be more frustrating to a player like Allen than having to watch his team from the sidelines.
I still look at the ongoing problematic behavior in Cincinnati and don't want to see that happen to the Chiefs. Herm Edwards, this is your golden moment. This is your chance to show that Kansas City will not tolerate this kind of stupidity. Do what the Bengals have repeatedly refused to do: bench a player that screwed up. If anything, blame it on his selfishness, because that is the heart of this matter. Allen got behind the wheel of that car knowing full well that his actions could get him into trouble and would let his team down. When he got behind that wheel, he put himself above the team. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. WRONG! Shame on you, Jared Allen. Chiefs' fans have had enough heartache this season. They don't need to deal with this right now.
Allen will likely be bargaining for a new contract this coming offseason. Let's all hope that his new contract terms include a personal cab driver and a new brain.

Jared Allen is a good kid. I am sure he is kicking himself right now. The team needs him because he ROCKS! Go Jared!

Couldn't agree with you more. Jared Allen IS a good kid. His teammates seem to love him and he's always enthusiastic about autograph sessions and mingling with his fans. But he needs help and, too often, teams ignore players that need help as long as they perform on the field. Allen made a lousy decision and, while the Chiefs really need him now, they more so need him to learn his lesson so it doesn't happen again.

Pretty harsh aren't you on a guy violating the vehicle code? Have you never received a traffic ticket? I'm sure you have. Did everybody cast judgement upon you? How would you feel if they did? Sounds like you got a 'holier than thou' attitude. And what does it have to do with playing Football? He wasn't drunk during the game like most of the fans who drink and then drive home. Sounds like a like of common sense there. Have you ever had a drink and drove? Oh, thats right, you are 'holier than thou'. What happened to the Bible which says, "those who have not sinned, cast the first stone?" Since when are you judge of a man's character? Can YOU stand up to judgement from God? I want you to be the one that stops behind the stop sign instead of sliding through like everyone else. Hypocrite!

Harsh? Not at all. I suggest you read this:

Drunk driving is a serious problem. Allen was not only endangering the lives of others by driving erratically, he was endangering his own life as well. And so if that makes me "holier than thou" to want Allen to learn his lesson so that he doesn't drive his car like a loaded weapon, then that's fine with me.
Like I said, I really like Allen. He's a heck of a football player and by all accounts, he's a really good guy. But he made a really bad decision, and it came very shortly after he made a bad decision afterward. We all make mistakes in life. I do too. And the hope is that we all learn from them. Allen didn't the first time, and I sure hope he does now.

Drunk driving is a major problem, I would just like for the Chief fans who dogged Eric Warfield to express the same sentiments and attitude towards Jared Allen. Hopefully it will not be a black/white issue, but a common sense issue.

I'm quite frankly shocked at your attitudes and inability to get the point of Jon's blog entry. First, a mere vehicle code violation is not a big deal, but a DUI arrest is. Secondly, DUI is a serious, serious matter. A first DUI arrest is forgivable, but a second DUI arrest means there's a bigger problem going on.
But I can't believe you all are missing Jon's primary point, and in fact, some could be critical of his point for a different reason. Allen's actions are critically stupid because he could cost his team in the long run. If Allen gets suspended for 4 games (and such a move by the NFL is certainly not unprecedented), then that's a huge blow to the Chiefs. Given the Chiefs' problems so far, the last thing they need is for their best defensive player to be suspended.
Please, think things through. To brush off a serious crime like DUI just because you're afraid of being "holier than though" is irresponsible, and certainly not in the line of Christian thinking either.

I would like to think that I would use better judgement if I were in the public eye like professional athletes are. Not to mention raking in the money that professional athletes make! The problem, as I see it, is that these young men go from low to middle class (in most cases) to wealthy without any help for the transition. They continue the behaviors they grew up with even after they have much more to lose. There needs to be some kind of program in place that teaches these young athletes how to handle their new found riches and themselves now that they are under public scrutany. On the bright side, at least he didn't get shot or arrested for drug trafficing like my moronic Chargers players did. I do think it is funny that the Bengals fan (see above) seemed quite supportive of what Allen did. He must be in the draft room with the Bengals GM every year.

Thank you so much for having the strength to call an outrage an outrage. This team was told by coach Herm that they were to stay out of questionable situations and remember who they represent. You remember, it was ONE week ago, when they had their bye week. I too am embarrased by this incident. He should face team discipline. Check my blogsite for my take.
