Bob Knight, Like Rudy Giuliani, Answers His Phone When He's Making a Speech

While giving a speech in April, former Indiana and Texas Tech coach Bob Knight's phone rang. So he answered it and had a profane conversation (with Knight, is there any other kind?) in front of everyone in attendance:

That video, which I first saw when FanHouse's Chas Rich posted it last month, has been getting a lot of attention in the blogosphere lately, at places like Meaningful Collateral and Deadspin. But I'm surprised no one has drawn the obvious political parallel.

There was a brief kerfuffle early in the presidential campaign when Rudy Giuliani answered his cell phone while giving a speech to the NRA. The Giuliani campaign tried to spin it as evidence that he's a dedicated family man -- the call was from his wife -- but it was painted by many as a sign that Giuliani is arrogant, aloof and much more concerned about his own time than the time of those around him.

I'll leave it to the political pundits to determine whether that's true of Giuliani, but I'd certainly say that describes Knight.

Texas Has a Rare Slip

Texas has three main offensive weapons: D.J. Augustin, A.J. Abrams and Damion James. When at least two of the three players are having good games, Texas wins. When only one of the players is putting up the points, they struggle against anyone. Today, it was Augustin trying to do it all, and the Longhorns lost to Texas Tech 83-80.

Augustin had 30 points, shooting better than 50%. Abrams and James combined for 24 points but shot 9-29 to get there. The Longhorns did not move the ball well and only had 9 assists on 31 field goals.

Texas Tech after starting out 1-3 under Pat Knight have now won 3 of 4. Texas Tech was aggressive on offense the entire game. Pushing the tempo and making Texas hurry their shots. They seemed to have full control of the game in the second half, as Texas could not get the stops nor slow the game. With 3:28 to go, the Red Raiders had a 70-56 lead.

To the Longhorns' credit they really made a late run. They stretched the game, by fouling and the Red Raiders missed 4 of 6 free throws to allow Texas to close to within 4 points. Texas got even closer, but Texas Tech went 11-11 on free throws in the final minute-and-a-half to keep the pressure on Texas to score.

Texas now needs help to win the Big 12 regular season outright, as they fall into a tie with Kansas. Texas had won 8 straight and 11 of 12 in the Big 12. The Longhorns are still in excellent shape to receive a #3 or even 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Bob Knight Goes to ESPN

John Feinstein called it shortly after Bob Knight's retirement resignation. Bob Knight is heading to TV. Bob Knight has chosen to take an analyst gig at ESPN just in time for March.

That Knight would be sought after for March and college basketball punditry, in general, is no surprise. Given the nature of the TV media coverage it would be either ESPN or CBS. Beyond simply the money, ESPN was the obvious choice. Given Knight's stormy relations with much of the media, he has been on very good terms with ESPN personalities. From the late Dick Schaap, to the present ex-coaches and players at ESPN there was a better comfort level.

[ESPN's executive vice president for production, Norby] Williamson said Knight's relationships with ESPN commentators such as Dick Vitale and Digger Phelps helped make him comfortable with the idea of joining the network. "This isn't just a few token appearances; Knight will work a packed schedule for ESPN. He's the type of person who wouldn't do it any other way," Williamson said.

Knight will start working during the ESPN "Championship Week" (the conference tournaments -- that Knight hated as a coach) and the sundry "Selection Sunday" specials ESPN will have the entire day.

No word on who ESPN has hired to work the 7 second delay and bleep button.

Bob Knight Dresses Like a Ref on Jay Leno

Former Texas Tech and Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Monday night:

Why is he dressed like a referee? I don't really know, although he tried to make a joke about how easy becoming a ref would be, saying, "There are fat guys that referee, there are slow guys that referee, there are some who don't see well, there are a lot of them who don't know what the hell the rules are."

Leno replied, "But it's dangerous, you could get hit by a chair."

The guest on the show before Knight was Larry the Cable Guy. Knight referred to him as, "Larry the Cable Car."

When Knight said he thought his son, new Texas Tech coach Pat Knight, will get along with the press better than he did, Leno said, "I think Hitler got along better with the press than you did."

Pat Knight Now 0-2

Texas Tech got blown out in the first half by Nebraska and never could catch up. Nebraska got a big first half from Alex Marics and just cruised the rest of the way to a 73-62 win

Like the previous game for Texas Tech, the Red Raiders came out strong at first and then faded quickly.

Obviously there wouldn't be a lot of interest in two teams that are 3-5 in the Big 12, but for the curiosity of Pat Knight taking over the head coaching duties with the resignation of Bob Knight.

Dad didn't exactly leave his son in a great situation to notch an early win. The first two games were on the road and the next one will be home against K-State. Tough love, I guess you couldn't expect anything else from Bobby Knight.

Random Bob Knight Video Moment: Losing It

Bob Knight's abrupt retirement from coaching this week means looking for a way to summarize a man who was extremely complicated. He could be profane, cruel, crude, a jerk and sometimes worse. This week we'll post some of the best Bob Knight clips.

This is the kind of outburst that is not Knight at his most endearingly profane. It's just plain disturbing. Here, he is just trying to tape his weekly show and asked about a recent loss. He talks about disappointment at being outscrapped, and then just loses it. It's the kind of behavior that throws into question claims by Knight in the past that he would never "pull a Woody Hayes." Uncensored, so NSFW or around young children.

Bob Knight on TV? John Feinstein Says It Can Work -- If Knight Can Tolerate Producers

Bob Knight quit as the Texas Tech basketball coach this week, but what will he do next? The man who may know Knight better than any member of the media, Season on the Brink author John Feinstein, said on Jim Rome's show that television could be next up for Knight:

"I can see him doing television. He used to tell me all the time about how good he would be at television," Feinstein said. "And he would be pretty good. Although I don't see Bob doing terribly well with a 29-year-old producer in a production meeting saying, 'Coach, we think the key to this game tonight is this, and we've built this graphic for you.' I don't see him responding terribly well to that."

So what Feinstein is saying is that Knight would be great when it comes to the Xs and Os of breaking down the game of basketball, but horrible when it comes to his people skills? Imagine that.

Random Bob Knight Video Moment: the Most Expressive Word

Bob Knight's abrupt retirement from coaching this week means looking for a way to summarize a man who was extremely complicated. He could be profane, cruel, crude, a jerk and sometimes worse. This week we'll post some of the best Bob Knight clips.

I don't know who or how these clips on Bob Knight are getting posted. I just know that I am exceedingly grateful for it. This is another NSFW or around children. Bob Knight was apparently getting ready to do a TV interview and was on good terms with the reporter. The reporter asked a question of word choices. Knight explains. After watching this, you have the answer as to why John Feinstein had to leave the profanity in Season on the Brink. No one would believe Knight was actually speaking without the profanities.

Rounding Up Opinions on Bob Knight's Retirement Resignation

Writing about Bob Knight should be more difficult. He is more than simply a bully. He is more than simply a great and legendary coach. How do you write a 500 word, a 1000 word or any word count of a column about this guy? Someone who has shown so many sides of himself to the public, that any article or post comes off as somewhat simplistic and written by a hater or an apologist?

The answer, is that you can't. So I think many writers just put their head down and write about one aspect and pay lip-service to the other part out of necessity.

No shock that every coach contacted had nothing but praise for Bob Knight and his decision to resign.

National punditry was a little different. A criticism stated by Michael David Smith at FanHouse was echoed in several places. The issue of hypocrisy of demanding commitment and loyalty and then quitting on his team may be something Digger Phelps and Dick Vitale can gloss over as not relevant, but it is something that can't be ignored.

Random Bob Knight Video Moment: 'Golf Your Way' Outtakes

Bob Knight's abrupt retirement from coaching this week means looking for a way to summarize a man who was extremely complicated. He could be profane, cruel, crude, a jerk and sometimes worse. This week we'll post some of the best Bob Knight clips.

This one isn't bleeped out, so definitely NSFW or around small children. Outtakes -- I hope -- of Bob Knight doing an instructional golf show called "Golf Your Way" that he did in the 80s. Apparently another version of this has been taken down. This has nothing to do with basketball. It's just funny in a crude and juvenile way. Bob Knight is a master of using curse words as commas.
